Description


Belongs to the tyrant flycatcher family and is distinguished as a small passerine bird, measuring between 11 and 12.5 centimeters in length and weighing around 9 to 11 grams. Its upperparts are predominantly olive-brown to rufous-brown, becoming noticeably warmer and brighter on the rump. The crown features a semi-concealed patch of bright yellow, orange, or reddish feathers, which is typically erected during territorial displays or when the bird is alarmed. The dark brown wings are accented by two prominent buffy to cinnamon wingbars formed by the tips of the wing coverts. Below, the plumage is pale yellowish or buffy-white, marked with distinct but diffuse grayish-brown streaks across the breast and along the flanks, giving it a characteristic streaked appearance. The bill is short, broad, and blackish with a paler base on the lower mandible, surrounded by well-developed rictal bristles.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropics, ranging from southern Costa Rica and Panama in Central America, throughout major portions of South America. Its range encompasses Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern and central Argentina, and nearly the entirety of Brazil, except for the dense, interior forests of the Amazon Basin. It is found from sea level up to elevations of 2000 meters, adapting easily to varied geographical and climatic zones.

Habitat: Prefers semi-open areas, including secondary growth scrub, forest edges, riparian thickets, agricultural borders, clearings, and suburban gardens. It shows a strong affinity for dense transitional vegetation and ecotones rather than the interior of mature, closed-canopy forests, allowing it to thrive in human-modified landscapes and highly fragmented habitats.

Feeding: Is primarily an insectivorous species. Its diet consists of a wide variety of small arthropods, such as flies, beetles, wasps, ants, and small spiders. It utilizes energetic foraging strategies, including aerial sallying and hover-gleaning to snatch prey from the undersides of leaves or mid-air. During certain seasons, it supplements this animal-based diet with small berries and soft fruits.

Behavior: Is mostly observed as a solitary individual or in pairs. It is a busy, active bird that spends its time moving through the low to mid-story vegetation, often staying partially hidden within dense cover. A highly diagnostic behavioral trait is its habit of frequently pumping its tail downward while perched. Its vocalizations include a series of thin, high-pitched, and slightly buzzy trills used for territorial defense and pair communication.

Nesting: Breeds at different times of the year depending on local climatic conditions and latitude. It constructs a deep, cup-shaped or conical nest suspended from a slender fork of a branch, usually situated 0.5 to 2 meters above the ground. The nest is woven from moss, dry grasses, plant fibers, lichens, and spiderwebs to ensure structural integrity. The female typically lays two creamy-white eggs speckled with a wreath of reddish-brown spots at the larger end. Incubation is performed mainly by the female for about 14 to 15 days, while both parents actively participate in feeding and protecting the nestlings.

Conservation status: Is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is supported by the extremely wide geographic distribution of Myiophobus fasciatus, its stable population trend, and its remarkable tolerance to habitat fragmentation and degradation caused by human expansion and agricultural development.
