Description

Is a social hymenopteran characterized by an exceptionally slender body and a moderately large size within its genus, with an adult body length ranging between 14 and 19 millimeters. Its morphology features a highly petiolate and elongated first gastral segment, which represents a key diagnostic trait for this group of paper wasps. The overall body coloration consists of a base of reddish-brown or ferruginous tones, contrasting with prominent, bright yellow markings on the pronotum, scutellum, metanotum, and the margins of the abdominal segments. Its wings are translucent with dark brown venation. The head features robust mandibles and a moderately wide clypeus, along with well-developed compound eyes that provide sharp vision for diurnal foraging activities.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the Neotropical region of South America. It is highly abundant in central and southern Brazil, particularly in states such as São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Its range also extends southwards into northern Argentina, eastern Paraguay, and temperate areas of Uruguay, displaying excellent adaptability to the environmental conditions of the Río de la Plata basin and the Atlantic Forest biome.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits open woodland ecosystems, secondary forests, tropical forest edges, and savanna transitions. However, it displays a high level of synanthropy, successfully colonizing rural, suburban, and urban landscapes. In these human-dominated environments, it frequently utilizes artificial structures, such as the undersides of roof eaves, ceilings, sheds, and concrete bridges, which provide excellent shelter from harsh weather and potential predators.

Feeding: The diet of this species is highly differentiated according to its life stage. Adults are mainly glucophagous, feeding on flower nectar, ripe fruit juices, and plant sap to sustain their daily energetic demands. In contrast, the larvae are strictly carnivorous. Foraging workers actively hunt for a variety of prey, predominantly lepidopteran caterpillars and small dipterans, which are thoroughly masticated into a protein-rich paste to feed the developing larvae individually inside their nest cells.

Behavior: It exhibits a eusocial structure, forming relatively small colonies that rarely exceed a few dozen active individuals. These wasps are generally non-aggressive toward humans, choosing to escape or adopt alert postures rather than attacking, unless their nest is directly disturbed. Foraging flights are conducted methodically during the warmest hours of the day. Intraspecific communication is highly developed, relying on tactile interactions such as mutual antennation, abdominal vibrations on the comb surface, and chemical signaling through specific pheromones.

Reproduction: The colony cycle is initiated either by a single fertilized queen (haplometrosis) or sometimes by a small cooperative group of founding females (pleometrosis). The nest consists of a single open, paper-like comb constructed from masticated plant fibers mixed with saliva, suspended by a thin, eccentric pedicel. To protect the brood from predatory ants, the females smear this pedicel with a chemical repellent secreted by the Dufour´s gland on their sixth abdominal sternite. Eggs are laid individually in the cells, progressing through larval and pupal stages before emerging as adult workers under the care of the founders.

Conservation status: This species has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is not listed on any global red lists. However, it is considered common and secure throughout its native range due to its large population size, vast geographic distribution, and outstanding ecological plasticity, which allows it to thrive in human-modified landscapes across southern South America.
