Description


Characterized by a striking and unmistakable morphology, this medium-sized picid displays a predominantly pure white plumage on its head, neck, and underparts, contrasting sharply with its glossy black mantle, wings, and tail. Adults measure between 9.4 and 11.4 inches (24 to 29 centimeters) in length and weigh approximately 3.4 to 4.8 ounces (98 to 136 grams). A highly diagnostic feature is the bright yellow eye-ring, devoid of feathers, surrounding a dark iris. Additionally, they exhibit a sulfur-yellow patch on the lower belly, and males feature a yellow wash on the nape, representing the primary sexual dimorphism, as females lack this nuchal coloration or possess it in a highly reduced form. The bill is strong, chisel-shaped, and blackish.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across central and eastern South America. Its geographic range encompasses vast territories of Brazil (particularly within the Cerrado, Caatinga, and Pantanal biomes), eastern Bolivia, the entirety of Paraguay, northern and central Argentina (reaching as far south as Buenos Aires and La Pampa provinces), and Uruguay. In recent decades, local populations have shown a southward expansion, successfully colonizing newly deforested agricultural zones.

Habitat: Inhabits semi-open environments and transitional ecosystems. It is frequently encountered in wooded savannas, grasslands with scattered trees, palm groves, forest edges, agricultural plantations, and urban parks. It strictly avoids the interior of dense, continuous humid forests such as the Amazon rainforest, showing a strong affinity for the Cerrado and the humid Chaco, where dead trees and wooden utility poles provide ideal nesting and foraging substrates.

Feeding: Possesses an exceptionally diverse, omnivorous diet compared to other woodpeckers. It is a significant consumer of wild and cultivated fruits, seeds, and nectar. However, it exhibits a specialized predatory behavior toward social insects, frequently raiding the nests of wasps and wild bees, as well as termite mounds. It uses its powerful bill to tear open paper or mud nests to extract larvae, pupae, and adults. It also consumes beetles and other invertebrates found under tree bark.

Behavior: Highly gregarious and vocal, exhibiting social structures that are uncommon among picids. They typically travel in noisy family groups of 5 to 10 individuals that maintain cohesion through loud, screeching calls. Their flight is strongly undulating. The group often employs a sentinel system: while most members forage on the ground or in tree canopies, one or two individuals perch high up to scan for aerial or terrestrial predators.

Nesting: Breeding occurs mainly from September to January. This taxon frequently engages in cooperative breeding, where non-breeding helpers assist the dominant pair with incubation and chick-rearing duties. Cavities are excavated in dead trees, palms, or artificial wooden structures such as telephone poles. The clutch typically consists of 3 to 4 glossy white eggs. Incubation is shared by both parents and helpers, lasting about 12 to 14 days, with the altricial young fledging after approximately 30 days.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Population trends are considered stable or increasing in some anthropogenically modified regions. Its high ecological plasticity allows it to adapt to and benefit from moderate deforestation and habitat fragmentation, which generate more open pasturelands.
