Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its modest size and highly cryptic plumage, this nocturnal raptor measures between 20 and 24 centimeters (approx. 7.8 to 9.4 inches) in total length, with a body mass ranging from 100 to 160 grams. It features prominent yet short ear tufts that can be raised or flattened depending on its emotional state or level of alertness. The species exhibits a highly variable polychromatic plumage, displaying gray, brown, and rufous morphs that provide superb camouflage against tree bark. Its distinct facial disc is pale gray, sharply bordered by a conspicuous black frame on the sides. The eyes are a striking bright yellow, set above a greenish-gray or yellowish beak. The underparts are intricately patterned with vertical dark streaks intersected by fine horizontal bars, creating a characteristic "herringbone" or cross-like appearance that serves as a key diagnostic feature to distinguish it from closely related species in its genus.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed throughout the Neotropics, ranging from southern Costa Rica and Panama southward to central Argentina and Uruguay. Its extensive range encompasses almost the entirety of South America east of the Andes, including countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and virtually all regions of Brazil. It is considered a sedentary resident throughout its range, meaning it does not undertake long-distance seasonal migrations, maintaining stable territories year-round.

Habitat: Highly adaptable and ecologically resilient, this bird occupies an impressive array of habitats. It is commonly found in secondary forests, wooded savannas (such as the Cerrado and the Chaco), gallery forests, humid forest edges, and shrubby transition zones. It generally avoids the continuous, dense interiors of pristine primary rainforests, such as the deep Amazon basin, preferring fragmented or semi-open landscapes. Remarkably, it has integrated successfully into human-altered environments, frequently nesting and roosting in urban parks, residential gardens, suburban groves, and agricultural plantations where mature trees are present.

Feeding: Operating as an opportunistic nocturnal predator, its diet is predominantly insectivorous. It preys heavily on medium to large invertebrates, including orthopterans (grasshoppers and crickets), coleopterans (beetles), lepidopterans (moths), spiders, and scorpions. However, it is also a capable hunter of small vertebrates, enriching its diet with small rodents, roosting passerine birds, lizards, tree frogs, and occasionally bats captured mid-air. It typically hunts from a low perch, scanning the ground before dropping silently onto its prey or catching insects on the wing using its sharp talons.

Behavior: Strictly nocturnal and crepuscular, its activity begins immediately after dusk. During the day, it roosts solitarily or in pairs within dense foliage or close to tree trunks. When threatened, it adopts an erect, elongated posture, compressing its feathers and raising its ear tufts to resemble a broken branch, relying on its crypsis to escape detection. Its vocal repertoire is highly characteristic; the primary advertising call is a bubbling, rising trill that terminates in a sharp, louder "pop" or clucking sound, often performed as a coordinated duet between mates during the breeding season.

Nesting: This species is an obligate cavity nester, relying entirely on existing hollows since it cannot excavate its own. It commonly utilizes natural tree cavities, abandoned woodpecker holes (family Picidae), and occasionally the sturdy mud nests of the rufous hornero (Furnarius rufus). It also readily colonizes artificial nest boxes in suburban areas. The female lays a clutch of 1 to 4 pristine white eggs directly on the floor of the cavity. Incubation is performed solely by the female for approximately 26 to 28 days, during which the male is entirely responsible for provisioning food to her. The young are altricial and remain in the nest for about 4 weeks before fledging.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Thanks to its remarkable ecological tolerance, vast distribution range, and ability to thrive in human-modified landscapes, its population remains stable, facing no major immediate threats, although local declines can occur due to intensive pesticide use and severe deforestation.
