Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Displaying striking sexual dimorphism, this small-bodied passerine measures approximately 10.5 to 11.5 centimeters (4.1 to 4.5 inches) in length and weighs around 15 to 18 grams (0.5 to 0.6 ounces). The adult male features a highly contrasting and bold plumage, with a velvety black crown, upper back, wings, and tail, juxtaposed against a brilliant white throat, breast, and wide collar around the neck. The feathers of the chin and throat are specialized, being elongated and stiffened to form a distinct "beard" or ruff that can be puffed out during complex courtship displays. The lower abdomen and flanks transition into a pale greyish hue. Conversely, females and immature individuals exhibit a much more cryptic and uniform olive-green coloration on their upperparts, blending into a lighter, yellowish-green on the underparts. A key field diagnostic mark shared by both sexes is the pair of slender, remarkably bright orange-yellow legs that stand out against the dim understory light.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the tropical lowlands of South America, ranging from northern Venezuela, Trinidad, and the Guianas, southward through the massive Amazon Basin and the coastal Atlantic Forest of Brazil, and westward into the cis-Andean regions of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and northern Bolivia.

Habitat: It primarily occupies the dense understory of lowland wet forests, mature secondary growth, humid woodland edges, and gallery forests, typically occurring from sea level up to 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) in elevation. It shows a strong affinity for areas characterized by dense shrubby vegetation and light gaps, which are crucial for establishing display territories.

Feeding: Primarily frugivorous, this bird feeds extensively on small berries and drupes, particularly from the families Melastomataceae, Rubiaceae, and Araceae. It supplements this diet with small insects snatched mid-air. To forage, it employs a specialized hovering technique, plucking fruits directly from the twigs while remaining airborne before returning to a nearby perch to consume them.

Behavior: It is famous for its elaborate lek mating system, wherein multiple males congregate in traditional communal display arenas on the forest floor. Each male clears a small circular "court" of all leaves and debris. From branches surrounding this court, they perform explosive, acrobatic jumps accompanied by loud firecracker-like snaps and buzzing sounds produced by modified primary wing feathers vibrated at high speeds.

Nesting: Parental duties are performed solely by the female, with no male involvement in breeding activities. She constructs a delicate, shallow cup-shaped nest suspended in a horizontal fork of a low shrub or sapling, usually within 1 meter of the ground. The nest is woven from fine plant fibers, dry leaves, and bound together with spider silk. The typical clutch consists of two cream-colored eggs marked with heavy brown speckles, which are incubated for 18 to 21 days.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it remains locally abundant across its extensive range, localized populations face pressures from habitat fragmentation and deforestation driven by agricultural expansion and infrastructure development, highlighting the importance of preserving contiguous tropical forest ecosystems.
