Description


Is a massive and powerfully built seabird belonging to the family Procellariidae, recognized as one of the largest flying birds of the southern oceans. It exhibits a body length ranging from 80 to 95 centimeters, a wingspan stretching up to 200 centimeters, and a body mass varying between 3.5 and 5.0 kilograms, with males being noticeably heavier than females. Its plumage is predominantly a uniform dark grey-brown, with a pale grey or whitish wash on the face and chin that lightens with maturity. The most definitive diagnostic feature is its large, heavy, pale pinkish-yellow bill tipped with a conspicuous reddish-brown nail, which prevents misidentification with its sibling species. The eyes are pale greyish-white in mature adults, and its legs and webbed feet are dark grey.

Geographical distribution: Occupies an extremely wide range across the Southern Ocean, circumpolar in distribution throughout subantarctic and cold temperate waters. It is frequently recorded in the southern regions of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. Its breeding grounds are restricted to subantarctic islands, including South Georgia, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Macquarie Island, and the subantarctic island groups of New Zealand, such as the Chatham, Auckland, and Campbell Islands. During the non-breeding season and juvenile dispersal, individuals migrate vast distances northward, regularly reaching the coastal waters of South America (north to central Chile and southern Brazil), southern Africa, and southern Australia.

Habitat: Inhabits pelagic marine ecosystems and cold-water coastal zones associated with subantarctic currents. Outside the breeding season, it spends the majority of its life flying over the open ocean, utilizing the strong winds of the Westerlies. For breeding purposes, it selects wind-swept subantarctic and cold-temperate islands, where it nests on exposed grassy slopes dominated by tussock grass (Poa spp.), open flats, coastal plateaus, and rocky or shingle beaches that provide adequate wind currents to assist in take-offs and landings.

Feeding: Exhibits an exceptionally opportunistic and predatory feeding ecology, acting as a crucial scavenger in subantarctic food webs. Its diet consists heavily of marine mammal carrion (particularly elephant seals and fur seals) and dead seabirds. It is also an active predator, preying on penguin chicks and weak adults, smaller petrel species, and eggs. At sea, it feeds on cephalopods, fish, and macrozooplankton, especially antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), caught by surface-seizing. Notable sexual segregation exists in foraging habits, where females forage pelagically in open waters, while males heavily exploit terrestrial food sources, defending seal and penguin colonies along coastal shorelines.

Behavior: Is a master of dynamic soaring, utilizing the wind shear close to the ocean surface to fly thousands of miles with minimal energy expenditure. On land, it is remarkably aggressive and territorial, particularly when competing for access to carcasses, where it establishes strict dominance hierarchies using conspicuous threat displays, including wings-outstretched postures and loud, harsh guttural croaks. Unlike many other tubenoses, it has strong legs and is highly agile on land, capable of walking and running efficiently across mud, tussock, and snow to pursue prey or defend food resources.

Nesting: The breeding cycle begins annually in the late austral winter, starting in August. Unlike its sibling species, it tends to nest solitarily or in loose, highly dispersed groups, often sheltered by tall tussock grass or behind boulders. The nest is a simple, shallow mound constructed of grass, moss, and small pebbles. The female lays a single white egg in late August or early September. Incubation is shared by both parents in alternating shifts and lasts for approximately 60 days. After hatching, the chick is guarded and brooded for about three weeks, after which it is left unattended while both parents forage. Fledging occurs after 110 to 120 days, typically in late summer.

Conservation status: Currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global populations are stable or showing moderate increases, the species faces ongoing anthropogenic threats. Marine threats include bycatch in longline and trawl fisheries, where birds drown after being hooked or entangled, as well as the ingestion of marine plastics and bioaccumulation of heavy metals. On breeding islands, introduced invasive predators such as feral cats and rodents pose a severe threat to eggs and chicks, though intensive eradication programs on several islands have significantly mitigated these pressures.
