Description

Characterized by a slender and moderately small body, this taxon typically reaches overall lengths of 45 to 65 centimeters, with adult females generally presenting a slightly more robust and longer constitution than males. The dorsal background coloration displays a spectrum of yellowish-brown, grayish, or olive-green tones, intricately patterned with dark transverse bars or black spots that may coalesce into longitudinal stripes along the anterior lateral flanks. The head features a distinct ornamentation consisting of two well-defined black post-ocular stripes extending toward the neck. The ventral surface is predominantly cream or pale yellow, occasionally showing tiny dark spots concentrated near the outer margins of the ventral scales. It exhibits smooth dorsal scales arranged in 19 rows at midbody, alongside a divided anal plate.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide geographic range throughout the Southern Cone of South America, with established populations across central and northern Argentina (including the provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and Corrientes), the entire territory of Uruguay, and the southernmost region of Brazil, specifically within the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Habitat: Strongly associated with open, highly humid ecosystems, this snake is commonly found in wet grasslands, swamps, marshes, lake margins, slow-flowing streams, and seasonal floodplains characteristic of the Pampa and Espinal biomes. Additionally, it displays a remarkable ecological plasticity, frequently settling in anthropically altered landscapes such as agricultural fields, cattle pastures, and peri-urban zones that maintain temporary or permanent water bodies.

Feeding: Exhibits a predominantly carnivorous diet, behaving as an active generalist predator with a marked specialization in hunting small vertebrates. Its trophic niche consists mainly of anuran amphibians (frogs and toads belonging to the genera Leptodactylus, Rhinella, and Physalaemus), capturing both adults and juveniles. On an opportunistic basis, it may also consume small lizards, shallow-water fish, and occasionally neonate rodents or terrestrial invertebrates.

Behavior: Principally diurnal and terrestrial, this species also displays strong semi-aquatic tendencies, swimming effortlessly through shallow water and dense aquatic vegetation. It is an active forager, constantly scanning leaf litter and soil crevices for prey. When confronted by predators, it relies on passive defensive mechanisms, which include dorsoventral flattening of the body to appear larger, rapid escape maneuvers, and the discharge of a foul-smelling musk from its cloacal glands; it is completely harmless to humans as it lacks venom.

Reproduction: Follows an oviparous strategy, with mating behavior concentrated during the warmer months of spring (September to November). Gravid females lay clutches consisting of 4 to 15 flexible-shelled eggs, choosing secluded, humid nesting sites under rotting logs, decaying leaf litter, or abandoned subterranean burrows. The incubation period spans between 60 and 80 days, with neonates emerging in late summer measuring approximately 12 to 15 centimeters in length.

Conservation status: Classified under the Least Concern (LC) category both globally and within national red lists in Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. Its populations are currently stable due to its broad geographic range and high resilience to moderate habitat modification; nevertheless, localized populations face threats from wetland drainage, intensive pesticide use in agricultural zones, and direct killing prompted by human ignorance.
