Description

This medium-sized carnivorous mammal is characterized by its slender build, pointed muzzle, and relatively long, elegant limbs. Adults typically weigh between 4 and 6.5 kg, with a head-body length of 50 to 80 cm and a bushy tail measuring 30 to 45 cm. The dorsal coat displays a grizzled agouti gray color, resulting from alternating bands of black and white on the guard hairs. In contrast, the underparts are pale, while the outer surfaces of the limbs, head, and ears exhibit a distinct yellowish-tan or reddish coloration. Key diagnostic markings include a prominent dark patch on the chin and a black tip on the tail, along with a dark spot at its dorsal base.

Geographical distribution: This canid occupies a vast range across the southern portion of South America. It is widely distributed throughout Argentina, extending south to northern Patagonia, across the entirety of Uruguay, into the southern grasslands of Brazil (primarily in Rio Grande do Sul), across central and southern Paraguay, and into the southeastern lowlands of Bolivia.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits open grasslands, scrublands, and semi-arid savannas, including the vast Pampas, the Espinal, and the dry Chaco ecoregions. The species exhibits high ecological plasticity, allowing it to adapt well to anthropogenically modified landscapes such as agricultural fields, pastures, and exotic forestry plantations. It generally avoids dense, continuous tropical rainforests and high-altitude Andean environments.

Feeding: As a highly adaptable, opportunistic generalist omnivore, its diet varies significantly depending on seasonal prey availability. It preys on a wide array of small mammals, particularly rodents (such as Cavia and Akodon species) and introduced European hares (Lepus europaeus). It also consumes ground-nesting birds, lizards, frogs, and large quantities of insects, such as beetles and grasshoppers. Additionally, plant matter like native fruits and agricultural crops represents a substantial portion of its diet, making it an effective seed disperser.

Behavior: This species is predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal, showing increased activity during twilight and night hours, though it can become diurnal in areas where human disturbance is minimal. It is solitary for most of the year, maintaining well-defined territories through olfactory cues such as urine and feces deposited on prominent objects. Its vocal repertoire is diverse, consisting of sharp, high-pitched barks and chattering sounds used to communicate and defend territory.

Reproduction: Monogamy is the primary mating system of this species, with pairs remaining together for the duration of the breeding season. Mating occurs annually between August and October. After a gestation period of 55 to 60 days, females give birth to a single litter of 3 to 5 pups. Denning sites are established in hollow logs, rock crevices, or underground burrows excavated by other mammals like viscachas. Both parents exhibit cooperative pup-rearing behaviors, including guarding the den and provisioning food for the growing offspring.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its wide distribution and stable population trends. However, local populations face ongoing threats from habitat fragmentation due to agricultural expansion, vehicular collisions on highways, domestic dog attacks, and illegal hunting for fur or as retaliation for perceived livestock predation, particularly targeting newborn lambs and poultry.
