This is an extremely slender and hydrodynamically adapted carnivorous mammal, known scientifically as Lontra longicaudis, perfectly suited for a semi-aquatic lifestyle. It features a total body length ranging between 90 and 150 centimeters (35 to 59 inches), with its muscular, tapered tail accounting for approximately one-third of this length. Body weight fluctuates between 5 and 15 kilograms (11 to 33 pounds), exhibiting a subtle sexual dimorphism where males are slightly larger and heavier than females. Its fur is remarkably short, dense, and glossy, showing a dark brown to grayish-brown coloration on the dorsum, while the throat and ventral areas are distinctly lighter, ranging from cream to yellowish-gray. The limbs are short and robust, equipped with fully webbed feet that facilitate aquatic propulsion, complemented by strong, sharp claws. Its head is flattened, featuring a broad muzzle adorned with highly sensitive vibrissae, and small, high-set eyes that allow for excellent surface visibility while swimming.
Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, extending from the coastal areas of northwestern Mexico southward through Central America, down to central and northern Argentina and Uruguay in South America. It can be found across various river basins, covering almost the entirety of Brazil, the Amazon Basin, the Colombian and Ecuadorian Andes at moderate elevations, and the major river systems of Paraguay.
Habitat: It inhabits a wide variety of freshwater, brackish, and occasionally marine ecosystems. It shows a strong preference for fast-flowing rivers, streams, lagoons, swamps, mangroves, and flooded forests. A critical requirement for its presence is the availability of dense riparian vegetation cover, which it utilizes to establish dens, seek shelter, and rear its young. It tolerates altitudinal variations from sea level up to approximately 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) in elevation, provided there are sufficient rocky crevices, fallen logs, or exposed roots along the banks to serve as refuges.
Feeding: It has a predominantly carnivorous and highly opportunistic diet, where fish from various families constitute its primary energy source. It actively supplements its nutritional intake by consuming decapod crustaceans (such as crabs and shrimp), mollusks, amphibians, small reptiles, and occasionally small mammals or waterbirds. Its hunting strategy involves active underwater pursuits, utilizing its sensitive whiskers to detect prey vibrations in turbid waters or low-visibility conditions.
Behavior: It is a primarily solitary species, with the sole exception of females accompanied by their offspring during the rearing period. It displays activity patterns that can be diurnal or crepuscular, although it often becomes strictly nocturnal in areas subjected to heavy anthropogenic pressure. It is an exceptional swimmer, utilizing undulatory body and tail movements for propulsion. It establishes well-defined territories, which it actively marks using feces, urine, and glandular secretions deposited on prominent landmarks like rocks or fallen logs, serving as vital communication channels.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle is characterized by a gestation period lasting between 56 and 86 days, with some evidence suggesting the occurrence of delayed implantation in certain geographic regions. Litter size ranges from 1 to 5 pups, though two or three offspring are most common. Births take place within underground dens or natural cavities near water bodies. The pups are born blind and entirely helpless, relying exclusively on maternal care and milk during their early developmental stages. Young otters begin swimming at approximately two months of age and remain with their mother for up to a year before dispersing to establish their own territories.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Near Threatened (NT) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The primary threats it faces include habitat degradation and fragmentation caused by riparian deforestation, water pollution from agricultural runoff and mining, and illegal hunting. Furthermore, conflicts with local fisheries and accidental drowning in fishing nets pose significant risks to the long-term viability of its populations.
