It is a small squamate reptile belonging to the family Liolaemidae, characterized by a slender and graceful body with a snout-vent length (SVL) typically ranging from 50 to 60 mm, reaching a total length of about 12 to 14 cm when factoring in its long tail. Its head is subtriangular in shape, slightly depressed, and covered with smooth, well-defined cephalic scales. The dorsal coloration is highly polymorphic, displaying shades that vary from ash-gray to olive-brown, decorated with a pattern of dark longitudinal bands and spots arranged in paravertebral series. The flanks often exhibit distinctive specks or pigmentations in yellowish, orange, or reddish tones, which become remarkably intense in adult males during the breeding season. Its dorsal scales are imbricate, strongly keeled, and mucronate, giving its skin a rough texture, whereas the ventral scales are entirely smooth and have a whitish or pale gray appearance.
Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the southern region of South America, occurring exclusively within Argentina. Its distribution range is remarkably vast, stretching from north to south along the country´s arid diagonal. It occupies a large portion of Patagonia and the central-western transitional regions, with stable populations documented in the provinces of Mendoza, La Pampa, Buenos Aires, Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and parts of San Juan. Its presence is particularly notable in open steppes and the prepunean foothills of both the Andes and the Precordillera.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits arid and semi-arid ecosystems, characterized by harsh winters and dry summers. Its ecological niche is closely linked to the Patagonian steppe, xerophytic shrublands of the Monte biome, and both coastal and continental sand dune systems. It prefers loose, sandy, or stony substrates with sparse vegetative cover, consisting mainly of shrubs like Larrea (creosote bush) and bunchgrasses of the genus Stipa (coirón). It finds crucial microhabitats under flat rocks, within soil crevices, or at the dense bases of thorny shrubs, using these shelters to thermoregulate and escape predators.
Feeding: It exhibits a strictly insectivorous and opportunistic diet, basing its sustenance on the capture of a wide variety of small terrestrial arthropods. Among its common prey are beetles, ants (formicids), flies, grasshoppers, and various insect larvae, along with spiders that forage on the ground. It utilizes an active foraging strategy combined with sit-and-wait ambush tactics, detecting the movement of its prey through its sharp eyesight before executing rapid, explosive dashes to capture them with its jaws.
Behavior: It is a strictly diurnal and heliothermic species, meaning it relies entirely on direct solar radiation to raise its internal body temperature and achieve its optimal activity range. During the early morning hours, it basks in the sun on rocks or patches of bare soil. It exhibits high agility and swift locomotion, using rapid running bursts to flee from any potential threat. During the colder months of the year, from late autumn to early spring, it enters a state of dormancy known as brumation, sheltering deep underground or in deep rock crevices where the extreme Patagonian winter temperatures do not fluctuate drastically.
Reproduction: It exhibits an oviparous reproductive strategy, contrasting with other high-altitude members of its genus that are viviparous. The reproductive cycle begins immediately after the brumation period ends, during the austral spring. Males display highly territorial behavior, performing head-bobbing displays and flashing their vibrant nuptial colors on their flanks to attract females and deter rival males. Following successful copulation, the female deposits a clutch of 2 to 6 flexible-shelled eggs, burying them in small chambers excavated in moist sandy soils or beneath flat rocks exposed to the sun. Incubation is temperature-dependent, and the juveniles hatch towards the end of summer.
Conservation status: It is currently assessed as a species of Least Concern (LC) on both national and international herpetological registries, owing to its vast distribution range and the apparent stability of its global populations. However, certain coastal populations or groups in areas with intense anthropogenic activity experience localized threats stemming from habitat degradation caused by sheep overgrazing, agricultural expansion, unregulated off-road vehicle tourism in coastal dunes, and the development of oil, gas, and mining infrastructure across the Patagonian plateau.
