This medium-to-large shorebird is characterized by an elegant silhouette, reaching a body length of 14 to 17 inches (36 to 42 centimeters) and a wingspan of 27 to 31 inches (70 to 80 centimeters), with a body mass ranging from 6.7 to 14.1 ounces (190 to 400 grams). Females exhibit pronounced sexual dimorphism, being significantly larger and possessing longer bills than males. The most distinctive anatomical feature is its long, slightly upturned bill, which displays a pinkish or bi-colored orange base and a dark black tip. During the breeding season, adults show a striking alternate plumage with deep chestnut-red underparts barred with dark brown, while the upperparts are heavily mottled with black, gray, and gold. In contrast, the non-breeding basic plumage is much more drab, dominated by pale gray-brown upperparts and whitish underparts. In flight, this taxon is easily identified by its distinctive white rump contrasting with a black tail, and its solid black underwing coverts, which distinguish it from other godwits.
Geographical distribution: It is an extraordinary long-distance neotropical migrant, with breeding grounds restricted to the subarctic regions of North America. Breeding populations are highly localized in Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and around the coastlines of Hudson Bay in Canada. Following the breeding cycle, it undertakes spectacular non-stop migratory flights over the Atlantic Ocean or the Great Plains. The vast majority of the population winters in the southernmost regions of South America, concentrating primarily on Chiloé Island in southern Chile, the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the Patagonian coast of Argentina, and the wetlands of Samborombón Bay in the Buenos Aires province.
Habitat: In its northern breeding range, this species occupies wet subarctic tundra, muskegs, Sphagnum bogs, and sedge meadows interspersed with dwarf spruce forests. During migration stopovers and throughout the austral winter, it depends heavily on coastal estuarine environments, particularly intertidal mudflats, salt marshes, sandy beaches, brackish lagoons, and occasionally inland freshwater wetlands or flooded agricultural fields where soft substrates are available for foraging.
Feeding: The diet is predominantly carnivorous, focused on a variety of benthic invertebrates. On the subarctic breeding grounds, it feeds mainly on aquatic insect larvae (such as dipterans and beetles), snails, and terrestrial beetles. In its coastal wintering habitats, the diet shifts toward polychaete worms, small bivalves, gastropods, and amphipod crustaceans. It employs a deep-probing technique, inserting its long, sensitive bill vertically into the wet mud to detect prey via tactile receptors located at the bill tip.
Behavior: Outside of the breeding season, this bird is highly gregarious, aggregating in dense, multi-species flocks of thousands of individuals on mudflats. It is a powerful, high-endurance flyer capable of traversing oceanic distances without resting. During the breeding season, males establish territories through complex aerial displays and high-pitched vocalizations. Foraging activity is strictly governed by the tidal cycle; birds feed continuously as the tide recedes and gather in high-tide communal roosts on upper beaches or salt marshes to rest.
Nesting: The breeding period begins in late May or early June. The nest is a well-concealed structure built on the ground, hidden among moss, lichen, or low shrub vegetation in dry hummocks within wet tundra. It consists of a shallow scrape lined with dry leaves, grasses, and lichens. A typical clutch consists of four olive-green or buff-colored eggs with dark brown blotches for camouflage. Both parents share incubation duties equally for a period of 22 to 25 days. The chicks are precocial, leaving the nest within hours of hatching to forage on their own under the protective vigilance of both parents until they fledge at approximately 30 days of age.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its extensive geographical range. However, it is considered a species of high conservation priority throughout its migratory pathway because its populations are concentrated in a very limited number of critical stopover and wintering sites. This concentrated distribution makes the species highly vulnerable to habitat degradation, climate change, and coastal development at these key geographic bottlenecks.
