Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its unique plumage patterns and medium size within the Trochilidae family, this bird measures approximately 10 to 11.5 centimeters in length and weighs between 5.5 and 6.5 grams. The dorsal region displays a vivid, metallic golden-green coloration, while the underparts feature a highly distinctive, bright white patch on the throat that extends to the center of the belly, bordered by contrasting olive-green flanks. Its straight bill is around 20 millimeters long, with a black upper mandible and a flesh-colored or pinkish base on the lower mandible. The rounded tail is composed of dark bluish-green feathers where the outermost rectrices display prominent white tips, which serve as a critical diagnostic mark during hovering and flight.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a specialized range in eastern and southern South America, extending throughout southeastern and southern Brazil (ranging from Bahia and Minas Gerais southward to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina (specifically restricted to the provinces of Misiones and Corrientes). This taxon is largely resident across its entire distribution, although local populations may undergo seasonal or altitudinal migrations influenced by the spatial and temporal abundance of blooming plant resources.

Habitat: Primarily frequents the understory and middle canopy of humid Atlantic Forest ecosystems, as well as degraded primary forests, secondary growth vegetation, shrubby thickets, and heavily modified anthropized environments such as suburban gardens, urban parks, and citrus orchards. It can be found from sea level up to elevations of 2,000 meters, demonstrating high ecological plasticity by utilizing transitional vegetation zones between highland plateaus and low-lying river basins.

Feeding: Sustains an exclusively nectarivorous and insectivorous diet, relying on a diverse array of native floral resources. It actively feeds on tubular flowers belonging to families such as Bromeliaceae, Malvaceae, Myrtaceae, and Fabaceae, hovering effortlessly to extract nectar with its specialized tongue. To supplement its nutritional requirements with essential proteins, it opportunistically captures tiny invertebrates and spiders either by gleaning them directly from leaf surfaces or by performing quick, acrobatic aerial sallies to catch insects mid-air.

Behavior: Demonstrates highly territorial and aggressive tendencies, actively defending high-quality floral feeding territories from competing hummingbirds and larger avian intruders. Its flight mechanics are characterized by extreme agility, speed, and precision, allowing it to perform complex maneuvers, hover, and fly backwards. It frequently emits a series of sharp, metallic chirps and trills used for territorial defense, communication, and complex courtship displays performed during the breeding season.

Nesting: Occurs mainly between September and February, coinciding with the peak flowering period of seasonal subtropical vegetation. The female takes full responsibility for constructing the deep, cup-shaped nest, using fine plant materials, moss, and lichens, tightly bound together with sticky spider webs for structural integrity. These nests are typically positioned on horizontal branches or forks of small shrubs at heights of 1 to 3 meters above the ground. The typical clutch consists of two white, elliptical eggs, which are incubated solely by the female for 14 to 16 days; she also assumes all feeding duties, nourishing the altricial chicks with regurgitated nectar and insects until they fledge after approximately 20 to 22 days.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, as it maintains a stable population trend and is capable of adapting to partially degraded woodlands and urban green spaces. However, the continuous fragmentation and loss of the native Atlantic Forest remains a long-term threat to its overall population density, necessitating local conservation efforts to preserve natural floral biodiversity and migration corridors.
