Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Other common names: Ponchito Chileno, Colegial.

Synonyms: [alauda] rufa.

Description: It is a small bird with ground-dwelling habits and pronounced sexual dimorphism. The male shows a striking plumage that is predominantly deep black, contrasting sharply with the rufous-brown lower back and rump, a key identifying feature. The wings are dark and the tail relatively short. The female, in contrast, displays a more cryptic coloration, with brown and grayish tones finely streaked, allowing effective camouflage in its environment. The bill is slender and dark, adapted for capturing small invertebrates, and the legs are relatively long. Juveniles resemble the female, with subdued plumage that aids concealment.

Geographic distribution: It is distributed in the southernmost regions of South America, mainly in Argentina and Chile, where it occupies extensive Patagonian and Fuegian areas during the breeding season. In winter, it undertakes northward movements, reaching the northern regions of Argentina, Uruguay, and occasionally Paraguay, thus temporarily expanding its range beyond its core breeding distribution.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits Patagonian steppes, open grasslands, coastal zones, and areas with low vegetation. It prefers open terrain with sandy or rocky soils, which allow easy movement. It is also found near coastal environments such as beaches and windy shorelines. During winter migration, it occupies similar open habitats further north, including fields and grasslands. It generally avoids densely forested areas.

Feeding: Its diet consists mainly of insects and other small invertebrates, which it captures on the ground. It forages actively by walking or making short быстрый movements, pausing to detect and seize prey. It may also consume larvae and small arthropods. Its feeding strategy combines quick movements with attentive observation.

Behavior: This species is active and territorial, especially during the breeding season. Males often perch on exposed or elevated spots to monitor their territory and vocalize. It is primarily terrestrial, with short, low flights. Outside the breeding season, particularly during winter movements, it may be observed in looser groups and in newly occupied habitats. In harsh weather, it may seek shelter in ground depressions or among low vegetation.

Nesting: It nests on the ground, building a simple and poorly structured nest, usually hidden among grasses or in shallow depressions. The clutch typically consists of 2 to 4 eggs, and incubation is mainly carried out by the female. Chicks hatch with down and are relatively precocial, leaving the nest shortly after hatching, although they remain under parental care during early development.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern, due to its wide distribution and overall population stability. However, it may be locally affected by land-use changes, overgrazing, and habitat alteration, both in its breeding and wintering areas.
