Description


This small decapod crustacean belonging to the family Ocypodidae stands out due to its pronounced sexual dimorphism. The carapace of this species measures approximately 10 to 16 millimeters in width, being slightly wider than long, and exhibits a variable dorsal coloration ranging from grayish, dark brown to olive green tones, often featuring lighter marbled patterns that provide highly effective camouflage against the muddy substrate. Males possess an extraordinarily enlarged major cheliped, which can account for up to half of their total body weight, showcasing vibrant yellowish, whitish, or light pink hues, while their minor claw is tiny and adapted for feeding. In contrast, females possess two symmetrical claws of reduced size, designed exclusively for harvesting sediment. Their eyes are located at the end of long, mobile stalks, granting them an expansive field of vision to detect potential predators from a distance.

Geographical distribution: This species is exclusively found along the southwestern Atlantic coast of South America, stretching from the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, through the entire estuarine coastline of Uruguay, and extending south into the northern region of the Buenos Aires province in Argentina, where its southernmost distribution limit lies within the salt marshes of Samborombón Bay.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits intertidal zones dominated by clayey-mud and sandy-silt substrates, which are highly characteristic of estuaries, coastal lagoons, salt marshes, and tidal creeks. It thrives in areas that are exposed during low tide and submerged during high tide, showing a preference for locations where halophytic vegetation, such as cordgrass (Spartina spp.), stabilizes the soil, although it requires open, vegetation-free mudflats to construct its burrows.

Feeding: It is a specialized deposit feeder or detritivore. Using its minor claws, it scoops up portions of wet sediment and transfers them directly to its buccal cavity. Within the mouthparts, a highly sophisticated sorting mechanism separates organic materials, including microalgae, bacteria, nematodes, and organic detritus, from the inorganic mineral grains of sand and clay. The indigestible mineral particles are then rejected and deposited onto the surface in the form of distinctive, small spheres known as pseudofeces or feeding pellets.

Behavior: This crab displays highly semi-terrestrial habits and strong diurnal activity, which is strictly governed by tidal cycles. During high tide, it remains sealed inside its underground burrow, plugging the entrance with a mud cap to preserve a pocket of humid air. As the tide recedes, it emerges to feed, repair its burrow, and engage in social interactions. Males engage in a distinctive visual courtship by waving their major cheliped in rhythmic, vertical patterns, a display used both to attract receptive females and to defend their territory against rival males through non-lethal, ritualized combat.

Reproduction: The reproductive cycle takes place during the warmer months of spring and summer, when rising temperatures stimulate metabolic activity and larval survival. Attracted by the visual displays and substrate vibrations produced by the male, the female enters his burrow to copulate. Following successful mating, the female carries thousands of fertilized eggs attached to her abdominal pleopods, forming a sponge that transitions from a bright yellow or orange color to a dark gray as development progresses. Once mature, the female releases the zoea larvae into the water column during nocturnal high tides, ensuring optimal planktonic dispersal and reducing the risk of predation.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Not Evaluated (NE) on the global IUCN Red List. Nevertheless, at a regional level, its populations are threatened by coastal wetland degradation, pollution from heavy metals and sewage in estuarine basins, and habitat fragmentation caused by urban and tourism expansion. Because of its sensitivity to environmental pollutants, it serves as an essential bioindicator of ecological health in southwestern Atlantic coastal ecosystems.
