Description


Belongs to a group of small, delicate butterflies within the family Lycaenidae, widely recognized for their intricate wing patterns and pronounced sexual dimorphism.

This tiny lepidopteran features a wingspan ranging from 20 to 29 millimeters. The species exhibits remarkable sexual dimorphism on the dorsal surface of its wings. Males display a vibrant, yet delicate pale lavender blue or violet hue, outlined by a narrow dark margin and a white fringe along the edges. In contrast, females present a mostly white and dusky brown dorsal coloration, with a scattering of iridescent blue scales concentrated near the wing bases and a series of dark, soft spots along the outer margins. The underside of the wings, which is identical in both sexes, displays a highly complex, cryptic pattern consisting of zebra-like brown and white transverse bands. Located at the outer angle of each hindwing are two prominent black eyespots edged in bright orange and dusted internally with shimmering metallic blue or green scales, which function as a decoy to misdirect the attacks of predators toward non-vital body parts.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the Americas, establishing populations in diverse bioclimatic zones. Its range extends from the southern parts of the United States, particularly within Florida and Texas, down through the entire Caribbean basin, including the Greater and Lesser Antilles. It continues southward through all of Central America and across most of South America, where it is found throughout Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, and reaching its southern limits in northern Argentina, making it one of the most successful lycaenids in the Neotropics.

Habitat: This adaptable species colonizes a wide variety of open, sunny environments. It is frequently encountered in disturbed areas, forest edges, scrublands, savannas, coastal dunes, and open fields. Additionally, it has integrated exceptionally well into urban and suburban landscapes, being a common resident of suburban gardens, public parks, and agricultural borders where its larval host plants are abundant, thriving at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1,500 meters.

Feeding: As caterpillars, they are specialized herbivores that feed primarily on the flower buds, blossoms, and developing seed pods of plants belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae), such as Galactia, Crotalaria, Phaseolus, and Albizia, as well as ornamental species of the family Plumbaginaceae, most notably Plumbago auriculata. Adult butterflies are generalist nectar-feeders, visiting a vast array of low-growing herbaceous wildflowers, particularly those in the Asteraceae and Verbenaceae families, while also partaking in puddling behavior to extract essential salts and moisture from damp ground.

Behavior: It exhibits a low, rapid, and highly erratic flight pattern, which serves as an effective defense mechanism against avian and insect predators. Highly active during sunny daylight hours, this butterfly spends significant time foraging and searching for mates. When at rest, it perches with its wings tightly folded together, exposing the cryptic undersides that blend seamlessly with dry vegetation. It frequently rubs its hindwings together in a slow, circular motion; this movement wiggles the false tails and draws a predator´s attention away from its head to the rear of the wings. Males are known to display territorial behaviors and often gather in groups on wet sand or mud to engage in puddling, absorbing crucial minerals like sodium.

Reproduction: This species is multivoltine, undergoing continuous breeding cycles throughout the year in warm, tropical climates. Females oviposit single, flattened, pale green or whitish disc-shaped eggs directly onto the flower buds of host plants. The resulting caterpillars are highly polymorphic, with colors varying from light green to yellow or reddish-brown, allowing them to blend perfectly with the buds and flowers they consume. The larvae share a fascinating facultative mutualistic relationship with ants (myrmecophily); the caterpillars possess specialized dorsal glands that secrete a sweet, nutrient-rich fluid, and in return, the ants defend them against parasitic wasps, flies, and other small predators. Pupation occurs in leaf litter or near the base of the host plant, with the adult butterfly emerging after a short pupal stage.

Conservation status: It has not been formally evaluated or placed under any threatened category on the IUCN Red List. Due to its extensive geographical distribution, high adaptability to human-modified ecosystems, and the widespread availability of its host plants, its global population remains stable and secure, warranting a status of Least Concern with no immediate conservation actions required.
