This is a robust and relatively large-bodied anuran that typically exhibits a snout-vent length ranging from 80 to 115 millimeters in adult males, while adult females can reach up to 120 millimeters. Its head is prominently large and triangular, featuring a rounded snout when viewed dorsally and distinct, prominent eyes with horizontal pupils. The dorsal surface of the body is characterized by six to eight longitudinal dermal folds that run parallel from behind the head to the cloacal region, giving the skin a distinctly ridged texture. Coloration is highly polymorphic, varying from olive-green to dark brown and gray, adorned with a series of symmetrical dark, rounded ocellated spots outlined in cream or bright yellow. The ventral region is primarily whitish or cream-colored, heavily marked by a dark reticulated pattern, especially dense around the throat and chest areas. The hind limbs are notably muscular, elongated, and adapted for powerful leaps, exhibiting conspicuous dark transverse bars on the thighs and shins.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the Southern Cone of South America. It is well-documented throughout central and northern Argentina, spanning the Pampean, Chacoan, and Mesopotamian regions. It also occupies the entire territory of Uruguay and is widely found in southern and central Paraguay. In Brazil, its presence is restricted to the southern and southeastern states, including Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, and São Paulo. Its broad geographical range reflects an exceptional ability to adapt to varying climatic and elevational gradients, although it is predominantly found in lowland plains.
Habitat: It is characterized by its colonization of a diverse range of aquatic and semi-aquatic ecosystems. It primarily inhabits lentic water bodies, such as permanent and temporary lagoons, marshes, swamps, wetlands, and flooded grasslands. However, it can also be found along the margins of slow-flowing streams. This amphibian demonstrates extraordinary ecological plasticity, allowing it to tolerate and thrive in highly anthropized environments such as agricultural fields, irrigation ditches, abandoned quarries, and artificial ponds in suburban gardens. During dry seasons, it retreats to humid microhabitats under fallen logs, rocks, or deep soil crevices.
Feeding: It is an opportunistic and generalist predator with highly voracious feeding habits. Its diet shifts significantly throughout its ontogenetic development. Tadpoles feed mostly on detritus, unicellular algae, decaying macrophytes, and periphyton. On the other hand, adults consume a wide variety of live prey, dominated by terrestrial invertebrates like beetles, grasshoppers, spiders, earthworms, and snails. Due to its large size, it is capable of capturing and ingesting small vertebrates, including other amphibians (including smaller conspecifics), small lizards, sigmodontine rodents, and occasionally ground-nesting bird chicks. Its hunting strategy is based on passive ambush, waiting for prey to move before capturing it with its muscular, retractable tongue.
Behavior: This species is predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular, although diurnal activity can occur during overcast or rainy days. It remains solitary outside the breeding season. When threatened, it displays a series of complex defensive mechanisms: it can inflate its lungs to increase its body volume and appear larger, emit a loud, high-pitched distress scream, or perform sudden, erratic jumps toward the water to hide in the muddy bottom. During the breeding season, males are highly territorial and utilize a low-frequency advertisement call to establish their calling sites and attract females, calling either from the water´s edge or while floating semi-submerged.
Reproduction: The reproductive period takes place during the warm spring and summer months, usually triggered by the first heavy seasonal rains. Amplexus is axillary. The female deposits her eggs in a large, floating foam nest that she beats with her hind legs using mucous secretions, which is often anchored to emergent aquatic vegetation to prevent it from drifting due to wind or currents. This taxon is renowned for its remarkable parental care, which is highly unusual among anurans. The female remains in close proximity to the nest to guard the eggs against predators, and after hatching, she actively guides the dense schools of tadpoles, swimming alongside them and aggressively defending them from predatory fish, birds, and aquatic insects.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This classification is supported by its extensive geographical distribution, high population density, and high resilience to habitat degradation. Despite not being under immediate threat of extinction, local populations are negatively affected by water pollution from agricultural runoff, habitat fragmentation caused by urban expansion, and the introduction of invasive species that compete for food resources or prey upon their larvae.
