Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a small, slender passerine measuring approximately 12 to 14 centimeters in length and weighing between 8 and 11 grams. It is visually distinguished by a prominent, erectile crest on its crown, which features a streaked pattern of black, gray, and buff. The dorsal plumage is predominantly grayish-brown, while the underparts are notably paler, ranging from light gray to whitish, with delicate dusky streaking restricted to the throat and upper breast. A conspicuous cinnamon or rufous wing bar is highly visible during flight. Its tail is long, deeply graduated, and terminates in pointed, stiffened feathers, which is a key diagnostic feature of its genus. The bill is short, slender, and slightly decurved, ideal for extracting prey from tight spaces, and the irises are dark brown.

Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the southern cone of South America. Its geographical range extends across central and northern Argentina (reaching as far south as northern Patagonia, in the provinces of Río Negro and Neuquén), throughout the entire territory of Uruguay, into the extreme southern region of Brazil (primarily restricted to the state of Rio Grande do Sul), and localized areas of southern Paraguay.

Habitat: This bird primarily occupies semi-arid environments, xerophytic scrublands, open woodlands, and transitional forest zones. It is highly characteristic of the Monte, Espinal, and Dry Chaco ecoregions. Additionally, it exhibits significant ecological adaptability, frequently inhabiting suburban gardens, public parks, exotic tree plantations, and shrubby pastures dominated by acacia trees and other thorny vegetation.

Feeding: Its diet is strictly insectivorous. It actively preys upon a wide variety of small arthropods, including spiders, caterpillars, beetles, ants, and aphids. Its foraging strategy is remarkably agile; it meticulously gleans prey from bark crevices, twigs, and foliage, often performing acrobatic maneuvers such as hanging upside down to inspect the undersides of leaves and branches.

Behavior: It is characterized by its restless, energetic, and highly active temperament, constantly moving with quick, jerky hops. It is typically encountered in pairs or small family groups, and it frequently joins mixed-species foraging flocks during the non-breeding season. Its vocal repertoire includes a high-pitched, rapid, and descending trill, which it utters continuously to maintain social cohesion while navigating dense vegetation.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place during the austral spring and summer, spanning from October to January. This species is a cavity nester that does not build its own free-standing structure. Instead, it utilizes natural tree hollows, old woodpecker cavities, or, very frequently, adapts and refurbishes abandoned nests built by other ovenbirds, such as the Firewood-gatherer (Anumbius annumbi). The nesting chamber is densely lined with soft plant fibers, animal hair, and an abundant lining of soft feathers. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 4 dull white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately 14 to 15 days. Both adults share parental duties, actively feeding and defending the chicks until they fledge.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its population trend is considered stable and it does not currently face severe global threats, localized habitat fragmentation caused by agricultural expansion and urbanization in native dry forests represents a long-term challenge for the maintenance of its preferred ecosystems.
