Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to a monotypic genus of small neotropical passerines that measure approximately 15 centimeters in length and weigh between 19 and 21 grams. Its upperparts are primarily a dull olive-brown, contrasting sharply with a boldly patterned head. It features a prominent white supercilium that meets at the nape, and a dark transocular stripe that creates a mask-like appearance. The crown has a bright yellow patch that remains concealed unless the bird is excited or displaying. The underparts are yellowish-white, heavily marked with dusky streaking on the breast and flanks. Its bill is short, broad, and black, evolutionary adapted for snatching insects mid-air and plucking small berries from forest twigs.

Geographical distribution: Extends widely across the Neotropics, ranging from southern Mexico and throughout Central America to central South America, reaching northern Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Populations at the northern and southern extremes of this range are highly migratory; for example, southern breeding populations undergo an austral migration toward the Amazon Basin during the southern hemisphere´s winter, whereas Central American populations move into northern South America after their breeding cycle.

Habitat: Found primarily along humid forest edges, woodland clearings, semi-open areas with scattered trees, wooded savannas, agricultural plantations with canopy trees, and suburban parks with mature vegetation. It avoids the dark interior of primary forests, preferring the vertical structure of forest canopies and ecotones where it can find high perches and potential nests of other bird species to exploit.

Feeding: Consists of an omnivorous diet that seasonally balances flying insects and small fruits. It consumes a wide array of dipterans, coleopterans, and hymenopterans captured during quick, acrobatic sallies from high perches, a behavior known as flycatching. This insectivorous intake is supplemented with wild berries, showing a strong dietary preference for parasitic plants in the mistletoe family (Loranthaceae) and various Melastomataceae species, which are swallowed whole, facilitating seed dispersal.

Behavior: Characterized as an extremely active, noisy, and highly territorial species. Its presence is typically detected by its persistent, high-pitched, and monotonous whistle emitted from the highest branches of the forest canopy. Despite its small size, it shows remarkable boldness, aggressively defending foraging territories and actively harassing much larger bird species, particularly during the breeding season when territorial friction peaks.

Nesting: Exhibits one of the most specialized reproductive strategies among passerines, acting as an obligate piratical nest parasite that never builds its own nesting structure. Instead, this species usurps the closed, globular, or hanging nests of larger birds, such as caciques (Cacicus), oropendolas (Psarocolius), and other tyrant flycatchers like social flycatchers (Myiozetetes). Through persistent and aggressive harassment, the pair of Legatus leucophaius constantly mob the host birds until they abandon their nest, after which the intruders eject any existing eggs or chicks and line the nest cavity with their own materials. The female then lays 2 to 3 dark-streaked eggs, which are incubated for about 16 days.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its vast geographic range, stable population trend, and high adaptability to fragmented and human-altered habitats ensure its survival, although localized habitat loss can affect the abundance of suitable host species.
