Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This small passerine bird belongs to the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae, characterized by its modest dimensions, measuring between 12 and 13.5 centimeters in length and weighing around 10 to 14 grams. The plumage displays a predominantly olive-brown coloration on the upperparts, contrasting with a pale yellowish or dull whitish throat and underparts, which become slightly brighter on the belly. Diagnostic field marks include two prominent buff or cinnamon wing bars on the wings and a narrow, inconspicuous whitish eye-ring. Its bill is relatively short and broad at the base, displaying a blackish upper mandible and a contrasting yellowish-flesh colored lower mandible, a critical morphological feature that distinguishes it from its close relatives within the complex genus Empidonax.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the South American continent, with a range that encompasses countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and broad regions of Brazil. The populations inhabiting the southernmost areas of its range, specifically in southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina, are known to be austral migrants, traveling northward to the Amazon basin during the southern hemisphere´s winter months to escape colder temperatures, whereas equatorial populations remain sedentary year-round.

Habitat: This species primarily occupies the understory and mid-story of humid tropical and subtropical forests, as well as gallery forests, mature secondary growth, forest borders, and dense woodland plantations. Although it exhibits a preference for the shaded and structurally complex environments of the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon biome, it demonstrates significant ecological adaptability by colonizing wooded suburban parks and river islands, ranging altitudinally from sea level up to approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, whilst generally avoiding excessively open or deforested landscapes.

Feeding: Its diet is strictly insectivorous, playing an essential ecological role as an invertebrate predator within its forest community. It preys upon a wide variety of small arthropods, including beetles, flies, wasps, bugs, and small caterpillars. To capture prey, it utilizes active foraging techniques such as short, aerial sallying maneuvers from a fixed perch to catch flying insects, as well as upward hover-gleaning to pluck insects directly from the undersides of leaves and twigs in the middle strata of the forest canopy.

Behavior: It is a solitary and remarkably unobtrusive bird, often remaining unnoticed due to its quiet habits and tendency to sit motionless within dense foliage. Its presence is most frequently revealed by its distinctive territorial vocalizations, which consist of a sharp, explosive, and rhythmic song resembling a "fizz-it" or "che-bort". While perched, it characteristically performs a rapid upward tail-flick, a behavioral trait common to several tyrannids that serves either to flush hidden prey or as a visual signal to conspecifics.

Nesting: The breeding season commences with territorial defense and advertisement by the males. The nest construction is performed primarily by the female, who builds an open cup-shaped structure intricately woven from moss, plant fibers, rootlets, and spider webs, often situated in a low branch fork, a natural tree cavity, or even within hanging masses of epiphytic mosses. The typical clutch consists of 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs blotched with reddish-brown spots near the larger end, which are incubated for about 14 to 16 days; both parents subsequently share the duties of brooding and feeding the nestlings until they fledge.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is justified by its vast geographical range and the fact that its global population size is not believed to be declining rapidly; however, local populations, particularly in highly fragmented and degraded forest landscapes such as the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, face ongoing pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation caused by agricultural expansion and urban development.
