Additionally, it frequently colonizes forest edges, humid savannahs, and suburban green spaces where a thick layer of decomposing leaf litter is present on the soil, providing the necessary microclimatic conditions for its subterranean life stages.
Feeding: The adult stage of this beetle is highly polyphagous and voracious, feeding on a diverse range of botanical families. Its diet includes leaves, flowers, tender buds, and ripe fruits of commercially vital crops such as soybeans, common beans, coffee, and various fruit trees. This feeding activity causes significant defoliation and physical damage to host plants. Conversely, the larval stages are primarily detritivorous, consuming decomposing plant matter, organic humus, and damp leaf litter on the forest or field floor.
Behavior: This species displays mainly crepuscular and nocturnal activity patterns, although individuals can be active during overcast days when solar radiation is low. Adults are highly gregarious, often forming dense aggregations on the undersides of leaves to conserve moisture and avoid predators. They are capable flyers, a trait that allows them to disperse rapidly and colonize new crop fields. When disturbed, they utilize a passive defense mechanism by dropping directly to the ground and blending seamlessly into the surrounding leaf litter.
Reproduction: The life cycle of this beetle follows a complete holometabolous metamorphosis, progressing through the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Following copulation, females deposit clusters of eggs directly into moist soil, beneath decaying organic debris, or within rich organic humus. This ensures that the newly hatched larvae have immediate access to food. The larvae are dark, elongated, and highly active, feeding in the upper soil layers. After completing several instars, they construct a small pupal chamber in the soil, emerging as fully developed adults after the pupation period is complete.
Conservation status: Given its status as an introduced, highly adaptable, and invasive species, it is not evaluated or listed under any threat category by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Instead, it is classified as a major agricultural pest of economic concern in its introduced range.
