Records from Santo Tomé

Other common names: Araña Doméstica del Sur, Araña de las Grietas.

Description: It is a medium- to large-sized spider belonging to the family Filistatidae, easily recognized by its marked sexual dimorphism, with males having slimmer bodies and extremely long legs, and females being more robust and larger. Coloration ranges from dark brown to grayish tones, giving it a dull and inconspicuous appearance. It has well-developed chelicerae and an oval abdomen, and its spinnerets produce a woolly, irregular silk, characteristic of the group.

Geographic distribution: It is widely distributed across the Americas, from the southern United States and Mexico through Central America and into northern South America. Its spread has been facilitated by its ability to adapt to urban and suburban environments.

Habitat: It inhabits dry and sheltered environments, both natural and artificial, including caves, rock crevices, hollow logs, outbuildings, and human dwellings. It usually establishes itself in dark, undisturbed places, where it can maintain its retreat for long periods.

Feeding: This species is strictly carnivorous, feeding mainly on insects and other small arthropods. It captures prey by ambushing them from its retreat, using silk to restrain them and then injecting venom for external digestion.

Behavior: It exhibits predominantly nocturnal habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Females remain in the same retreat for most of their lives, while males actively wander in search of mates. It is not aggressive and will bite only in defensive situations, such as when handled or pressed.

Reproduction: Reproduction is sexual and usually occurs during warmer months. The female produces egg sacs that are placed within the retreat and guarded during development. Spiderlings remain near the hatching site for some time before gradually dispersing.

Conservation status: It has not been formally assessed globally and does not have an assigned conservation status. Due to its wide distribution and tolerance of modified environments, it is not currently considered threatened.
