Description


Exhibits a medium-sized wingspan measuring between 45 and 55 millimeters. The dorsal surface of the wings displays a rich, dark brown ground color, punctuated by conspicuous, multi-colored eyespots (ocelli) on both forewings and hindwings, which serve to deter avian predators. A prominent, bright orange-yellow band stretches diagonally across the forewings, providing a stark visual contrast. Conversely, the ventral side of the wings is highly cryptic, featuring mottled shades of gray, brown, and tan that mimic dry leaves, offering outstanding camouflage when the wings are folded in a resting position. Taxonomically, it is distinguished from closely related species by the dark, almost blackish nudum of its antennal clubs.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropical realm and extending into the southern reaches of the Nearctic region. Its geographic range stretches from the southern tips of the United States (most notably in southern Florida and southern Texas), continuing through the islands of the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and spanning deep into South America as far south as Argentina and Uruguay.

Habitat: Shows a strong preference for coastal ecosystems, particularly mangrove forests and salt marshes. However, it displays a high degree of ecological adaptability, frequently inhabiting disturbed open fields, coastal dunes, dry shrublands, roadsides, and suburban vacant lots where its primary host plants are present. It thrives in warm, tropical climates and is highly tolerant of high-salinity coastal environments.

Feeding: As an adult, this butterfly is mainly nectarivorous, visiting low-growing flowers to feed on nectar, with a preference for species belonging to the genera Lantana, Avicennia, Bidens, and Stachytarpheta, which provide essential sugars for sustained flight. In contrast, the larval stage is strictly herbivorous, feeding voraciously on the foliage of host plants, most notably the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), as well as various wild herbs in the families Acanthaceae and Verbenaceae, such as the genus Ruellia.

Behavior: Demonstrates strictly diurnal and heliophilic habits, flying most actively during the warmest, sunniest hours of the day. Males are notably territorial, frequently perching on patches of bare ground or low-hanging leaves to scan their surroundings, embarking on fast, rapid, and erratic patrol flights to intercept passing females or defend their territory from rival males. When threatened, they instantly close their wings to blend with the substrate or flash their vivid dorsal eyespots to startle potential predators.

Reproduction: Begins with an energetic aerial courtship ritual initiated by the male. Following successful copulation, the female deposits her pale green eggs singly on the undersides of host plant leaves. The emerging caterpillars are dark-colored, armored with branched, spiny tubercles along their bodies to ward off insectivorous predators. Upon reaching maturity, the larva pupates by hanging upside down from a silken pad, forming a pendant chrysalis that closely resembles a withered leaf or twig, protecting the developing pupa until the adult butterfly emerges.

Conservation status: Has not been globally evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and is generally considered common and widespread throughout its extensive range. Nonetheless, localized populations face significant threats due to the degradation and destruction of mangrove habitats driven by coastal development, pollution, and rising sea levels, making the conservation of coastal wetlands vital for maintaining stable populations of this lepidopteran.
