Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This medium-sized passerine belongs to the Icteridae family, easily recognized by its slender profile and an average length of 19 to 22 centimeters. It features a predominantly glossy black plumage covering its entire body, which creates a sharp and elegant contrast with its most diagnostic field mark: a prominent rufous, chestnut, or cinnamon-colored shoulder patch on the lesser and median wing coverts. Its bill is long, sharply pointed, and slightly decurved, exhibiting a dark coloration adapted for probing flowers, bark crevices, and curled leaves. Sexual dimorphism is not highly pronounced regarding coloration, although immature individuals tend to display a duller, more brownish plumage and lack the fully saturated tone of the characteristic shoulder patch.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across central-southern South America, with a native range encompassing northern and central Argentina, the entirety of Paraguay, western and southern Uruguay, eastern Bolivia, and vast territories of central, southern, and southeastern Brazil, including major ecological biomes such as the Cerrado, the Pantanal, and the Atlantic Forest. This species has demonstrated high environmental adaptability, allowing it to gradually colonize anthropized landscapes and expand toward urban boundaries.

Habitat: It occurs in a diverse array of semi-open and wooded environments, including semideciduous forests, wooded savannas, Chaco woodlands, gallery forests, and riparian thickets. Additionally, it has integrated successfully into human-dominated areas, being a common sight in suburban parks, urban gardens, and orchards. It shows a strong preference for the middle to upper canopies of trees, generally avoiding dense, closed-canopy interior forests as well as wide-open grasslands.

Feeding: It has an omnivorous diet and highly versatile foraging habits that adapt to seasonal resource availability. It consumes a significant volume of invertebrates, including caterpillars, beetles, spiders, and ants, which it gleans from bark, leaves, and twigs. This protein intake is supplemented by wild fruits, berries, and a substantial amount of nectar from flowering trees like the Erythrina crista-galli (cockspur coral tree) or introduced eucalyptus species, making it an active pollinator as it transports pollen on its forehead and bill.

Behavior: It is typically observed foraging in pairs or small family groups, maintaining constant vocal contact through a variety of calls. It is highly active and agile, often performing acrobatic, upside-down maneuvers on thin outer branches to reach food. A remarkable aspect of its behavior is its exceptional mimicry skills, weaving the vocalizations of other bird species into its own melodious, complex song, which is interspersed with sharp whistles used for territorial defense and pair bonding.

Nesting: Its breeding season is characterized by the construction of a highly elaborate, pendulous, bag-like nest woven by the female using flexible plant fibers, fine roots, grass, and animal hair. This basket-like structure is hung from slender outer branches in the upper canopy, hidden among dense foliage, or frequently suspended beneath the broad leaves of palm trees (Arecaceae). The typical clutch consists of two to three eggs, which are white or pale bluish-white, marked with dark brown and grayish spots. The incubation period lasts about 14 days, and both parents participate in feeding the altricial nestlings until they fledge. The species is a frequent host to the brood parasite Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis).

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The global population is considered stable, as the species does not face severe immediate threats and is highly resilient to habitat fragmentation, benefiting from the abundance of ornamental trees and gardens in urbanized landscapes.
