Brazilian Marsh Rat

Is a large-bodied cricetid rodent characterized by prominent semi-aquatic adaptations that distinguish it within its family. It features a robust, stout body measuring between 200 and 250 mm in head-and-body length, complemented by a thick, scaly tail of 150 to 200 mm which is slightly shorter than the body. Adult specimens typically weigh between 200 and 400 grams. The dorsal pelage is dense, soft, and displays a reddish-brown to yellowish-brown coloration mixed with black guard hairs, whereas the ventral region is conspicuously lighter, ranging from dirty white to pale orange. Its hind feet are notably enlarged, displaying well-developed interdigital webbing and lateral fringes of stiff hairs that serve as efficient paddles during active swimming.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the east-central and southern regions of South America. Its geographic range primarily encompasses central and southern Brazil, extending throughout Uruguay, eastern Paraguay, and into the northeastern provinces of Argentina, particularly along the basins of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers.

Habitat: Inhabits freshwater wetlands and seasonal floodplains. It is highly specialized to riparian ecosystems, being commonly found in swamps, marshes, bogs, slow-flowing riverbanks, and lagoons with abundant emergent vegetation. Additionally, the species has shown a remarkable ability to colonize anthropogenic landscapes, frequently establishing stable populations in flooded rice paddies and sugarcane fields where structural cover is abundant.

Feeding: Consumes a strictly herbivorous diet with a strong preference for aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation. Its feeding regimen includes tender stems, leaves, roots, and shoots of grasses, sedges, and water hyacinths. In agricultural areas, it feeds intensively on the young stalks of rice and sugarcane, occasionally causing notable economic damage and being categorized as a crop pest.

Behavior: Exhibits primarily crepuscular and nocturnal activity patterns, reducing its movements during daylight hours to minimize predation risk. It is an exceptional swimmer and diver, using its tail as a rudder and its webbed hind feet for powerful propulsion. To avoid water level fluctuations, it constructs complex aerial nests woven from aquatic reeds and grasses, situated on vegetation branches or stalks above the water surface or damp soil.

Reproduction: Exhibits a high reproductive potential which allows for rapid population recovery. Breeding activity occurs year-round, with distinct peaks during the spring and summer months when warm temperatures and abundant rainfall optimize food resources. Following a gestation period of approximately 26 to 30 days, females give birth to litters of 3 to 8 offspring that are born altricial, with closed eyes and lacking fur, reaching independence and sexual maturity within a few months.

Conservation status: Listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is justified by its extensive geographic range, large and stable populations, and high ecological resilience, which allows it to adapt to and thrive in human-modified wetland ecosystems.
