Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Vulnerable

Description

Exhibits a marked sexual dimorphism and measures approximately 7.5 to 8.2 inches (19 to 21 centimeters) in total length. Adult males display a striking and pristine snowy white plumage that contrasts sharply with their deep black wings and tail feathers. In contrast, females present a much more subdued and cryptic appearance, characterized by a slate-gray or brownish-gray back, a whitish belly, and a chest delicately streaked with gray, which provides excellent camouflage during critical life stages. The bill is short, stout, and entirely black, specialized for securing invertebrate prey, while the dark eyes stand out vividly against the clean, white facial feathers.

Geographical distribution: Is restricted exclusively to the southeastern region of South America. Its range encompasses southern Brazil (specifically the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná), throughout the territory of Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina (with fragmented populations remaining in the provinces of Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Misiones, and northern Buenos Aires). The historical range of this taxon has experienced significant contraction due to landscape transformation across the Southern Cone´s grasslands.

Habitat: Primarily frequents wet natural grasslands, damp savannas, marshes, and temporary wetlands. It exhibits a highly specialized ecological association with plant communities of the genus Eryngium (locally known as caraguatales), which provide essential structural support for its daily activities, acting as natural lookout perches and offering crucial shelter from predators. It avoids dense woodlands, urbanized zones, and areas heavily transformed by industrial agriculture.

Feeding: Maintains a strictly insectivorous diet. It consumes a diverse array of terrestrial and aerial invertebrates, including beetles, grasshoppers, dragonflies, caterpillars, and flies. To capture its prey, this species utilizes an active foraging strategy of perch-to-ground sallying, sitting motionless on prominent lookouts such as fence posts, tall shrubs, or dry flower stalks before diving swiftly to the ground or executing short aerial maneuvers to snatch flying insects.

Behavior: Is characterized as a territorial bird typically observed singly, in monogamous pairs, or in small family cohorts during the post-breeding season. Its conspicuous white coloration makes it highly visible across the open flatlands. It frequently participates in mixed-species associations, notably with the Saffron-cowled Blackbird (Xanthopsar flavus), a relationship that enhances collective vigilance and predator detection in open grassland matrices.

Nesting: Breeding activities occur primarily from September to January. The pair constructs a neat, open-cup nest using dried grass stems, fine roots, and spiderwebs, lining the interior chamber with softer materials such as feathers and animal hair. This structure is typically placed low to the ground, meticulously concealed within the thorny protection of Eryngium clumps or dense shrubs. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 4 white eggs speckled with reddish-brown spots. Both adults share the duties of territorial defense and provisioning the nestlings.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The primary threats driving its population decline are the rapid conversion, degradation, and fragmentation of native temperate grasslands for intensive agriculture (particularly soybean cultivation), commercial afforestation with exotic pine and eucalyptus trees, and unsustainable livestock grazing practices.
