Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This distinctive and medium-sized raptor belongs to the family Falconidae, easily recognized by its heavy, large head and a prominent broad black mask that wraps across its eyes and cheeks, meeting at the back of the neck like a collar. The plumage of the crown, neck, and entire underparts ranges from creamy white to pale buff, offering a stark, elegant contrast against the dark chocolate-brown back, mantle, and wings. The relatively long, rounded tail is boldly barred with alternating bands of black and yellowish-buff. It possesses large, dark brown eyes that facilitate sharp binocular vision, a robust black bill with a yellow cere, and unfeathered, pale yellow legs. Adult specimens measure between 18 to 21 inches (45 to 53 centimeters) in length, with a wingspan of 31 to 37 inches (80 to 95 centimeters), and weigh between 17.6 to 28.2 ounces (500 to 800 grams), with females displaying slight sexual dimorphism by being larger than males.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, ranging from northern Mexico (specifically southern Sonora and Tamaulipas) south through Central America to South America. In the southern continent, its range encompasses the areas east of the Andes down to northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and across most of Brazil. It is a sedentary, non-migratory species, remaining in its established home ranges throughout the entire year.

Habitat: This bird prefers semi-open landscapes, forest edges, tropical deciduous forests, savannas interspersed with tall trees, and agricultural areas with nearby secondary woodland patches. It actively avoids the interior of dense, continuous tropical rainforests, such as the heart of the Amazon, preferring ecotones where open ground meets canopy cover. It can be found from sea level up to elevations of 4,900 feet (1,500 meters), although occasional records exist at higher altitudes within humid Andean valleys.

Feeding: It is a highly specialized predator that exhibits a diet almost exclusively centered on snakes (ophiophagy), capturing both arboreal and terrestrial species. Its prey includes highly venomous snakes from genera such as Bothrops and Crotalus, as well as various non-venomous colubrids. It occasionally supplements its diet with lizards, small rodents, bats, and large insects. Its hunting strategy involves scanning the ground from a high, conspicuous perch, diving rapidly onto the prey, and pinning it down before delivering a powerful, crushing bite just behind the head to sever the spinal cord or decapitate the snake, rendering its venomous fangs useless.

Behavior: It spends long periods sitting conspicuously on high, bare branches of emergent trees, scanning its surroundings with great patience. It is highly vocal and renowned for its loud, resonant, and mournful call that resembles a human laugh or a repetitive lament, often transcribed as a rhythmic "gwa-co" or a long, accelerating series of laughing notes, which are most frequently heard during the early morning hours and at dusk. It is primarily solitary or found in monogamous pairs that aggressively defend their territory from rivals through loud vocal duets.

Nesting: It does not construct its own physical nest structure, opting instead for an opportunistic approach by utilizing natural cavities in large forest trees, abandoned stick nests built by other raptor species (such as Buteo hawks or caracaras), or occasionally sheer cliff ledges. Breeding seasons vary regionally, usually coinciding with the onset of the wet season. The female typically lays a single egg (rarely two), which is creamy-white and heavily blotched with deep chocolate-brown. The incubation period lasts between 40 and 45 days, conducted primarily by the female while the male provides food, and the chick fledges after 55 to 60 days of parental care.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population is considered stable and its geographical range is exceptionally vast, certain localized populations face progressive declines due to habitat loss from rapid deforestation, agricultural expansion, and the cutting of old-growth trees, which deprives them of essential nesting cavities.
