Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a small, active passerine bird measuring approximately 10 to 11 centimeters in length and weighing between 7 and 10 grams. One of its most distinctive physical features is its pale yellow to whitish iris, which gives it a striking, intense expression. The upperparts are predominantly olive-gray to grayish-brown, with a slightly darker crown. The wings are dusky, featuring notable yellowish-white margins on the wing coverts that form two subtle wing bars. The throat and chest are white, marked with prominent dark gray vertical streaking, which transitions into a clean, pearly-white abdomen and vent, hence its common name. The bill is relatively long, broad-based, flattened, and dark, with a lighter base on the lower mandible.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across central and northern South America in a somewhat disjunct pattern. Its range extends from northern Colombia and Venezuela, southward through much of Brazil (particularly the northeastern, central, and southern regions), eastern Bolivia, the entirety of Paraguay, into northern Argentina and northwestern Uruguay. This broad geographic footprint showcases its adaptability across a variety of ecological zones, primarily in lowlands, though it can be found at elevations up to 2000 meters above sea level.

Habitat: It occupies a wide range of wooded and shrubby environments, showing a clear preference for dry, deciduous, and semi-deciduous forests. It is highly representative of dry ecoregions such as the Caatinga and Cerrado of Brazil, as well as the dry Chaco of Paraguay and Argentina. Additionally, it easily colonizes gallery forests, thorny scrublands, humid forest edges, second-growth woodlands, agricultural clearings, urban parks, and suburban gardens, demonstrating a remarkable tolerance to habitat fragmentation.

Feeding: It is strictly insectivorous, feeding on a diverse array of small invertebrates, including beetles, flies, bugs, and spiders gleaned from vegetation. It forages actively in the understory and mid-story levels of the canopy, employing a hover-gleaning or sally-strike technique, making rapid, short aerial lunges to snap insects directly from the undersides of leaves and twigs before returning to a nearby perch.

Behavior: It is a highly active and territorial bird, usually encountered singly or in pairs, rarely joining mixed-species flocks. While foraging, it frequently keeps its tail partially cocked and swings it rhythmically from side to side. Although it is small and often remains concealed within dense foliage, its presence is easily detected by its distinctive vocalizations. Its song consists of a series of dry, rapid, mechanical trills or clicking sounds that resemble a winding clockwork toy or a small rattle.

Nesting: The breeding process of this species features highly elaborate nest construction. It builds a purse-shaped or pear-shaped hanging nest with a small, hooded side entrance near the bottom. This structure is woven using flexible materials like dry grasses, mosses, plant fibers, and spiderwebs, which provide both structure and elasticity, suspended from low branches about 0.5 to 3 meters above the ground. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs, finely speckled with reddish-brown spots near the larger end, with both parents contributing to the defense and feeding of the nestlings.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is justified by its extensive global range, stable population trends, and its high ecological resilience, which allows it to thrive in moderately degraded and human-modified landscapes where other forest specialists cannot survive.
