Exhibits a slender and elegant wing morphology with a wingspan typically ranging between 7.5 and 8.0 centimeters. The background coloration of the wings is a deep, velvety black, contrasted by a brilliant, intense red or crimson transverse band on the forewings and a thin pale yellow longitudinal stripe on the hindwings. This species is highly famous for its geographical polymorphism, participating in a classic Müllerian mimicry ring with Heliconius melpomene, where both unpalatable species share identical color patterns in any given region to reinforce predator avoidance. The antennae are remarkably long and slender, while the scales on the wings contain chemical pigments that signal their toxicity.
Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropical realm. Its geographical range extends from southern Mexico through all of Central America, continuing southwards throughout South America down to northern Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. It is predominantly a lowland species, being absent only from high-altitude regions of the Andes mountain range.
Habitat: Colonizes mainly the understory and margins of humid tropical rainforests, secondary growth forests, disturbed brushlands, and shaded agricultural areas such as cacao and coffee plantations. It is most commonly observed at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1,500 meters, where it prefers sunny gaps and edges that receive enough sunlight to promote the growth of its larval host plants.
Feeding: Displays a highly specialized diet that sets it apart from most other lepidopterans. Adult butterflies actively collect and process pollen from plants in the Cucurbitaceae family, specifically from the genera Psiguria, Gurania, and Anguria, alongside sucking nectar from Rubiaceae and Verbenaceae. By agitating the pollen on their proboscis with saliva, they extract essential amino acids, which grants them an extraordinary lifespan of up to six months and the energy to sustain continuous egg production. The larvae, conversely, are strict herbivores that feed on the leaves and young shoots of various Passiflora species.
Behavior: Characterized by a slow, fluttering, and highly deliberate flight pattern, which is an evolutionary adaptation designed to display its bright, aposematic warning coloration to visual predators like birds. This species shows strong gregarious behavior at night, gathering in communal roosts on low-hanging dry twigs to which they return consistently every evening. They also show high site fidelity, patrolling the same forest paths and foraging routes day after day within a defined home range.
Reproduction: Begins when a female, guided by chemical cues detected by receptors on her legs, deposits her bright yellow eggs singly on the fresh growing tips of Passiflora vines. The emerging larvae are whitish-yellow with black spots and covered in branched black spines (scoli) that deter predators, while they accumulate toxic cyanogenic glycosides from their host plant. The pupation phase occurs within a brown chrysalis that resembles a dead leaf, complete with gold reflective spots and spines. Males display a strategy known as pupal mating, where they locate female pupae shortly before emergence and wait on them, sometimes mating with the female just as she begins to eclose from the pupal case.
Conservation status: Is currently not listed under any threat category on the IUCN Red List, generally being regarded as a species of Least Concern due to its expansive geographic range, local abundance, and relative resilience to habitat disturbance. Nonetheless, local populations face localized pressures from deforestation and the fragmentation of primary tropical forests.
