The elytral coloration typically varies from pale yellow to orange and deep red, often bearing anywhere from 0 to 22 black spots, although melanic forms with black backgrounds and large red spots are also common. A prominent, dark "M"- or "W"-shaped pattern is frequently visible on the light-colored pronotum, serving as a key diagnostic feature. Additionally, many individuals exhibit a distinct transverse ridge near the apex of the elytra.
Geographical distribution: Originally native to eastern Asia, its indigenous range extends from central Siberia southward through China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan. Introduced intentionally across several continents as a biological control agent to manage agricultural pests, it has rapidly escaped cultivation. Today, it is established as a highly successful invasive species throughout North America, major portions of South America, nearly all of Europe, and parts of South Africa, demonstrating an unprecedented capacity for rapid range expansion.
Habitat: Demonstrates remarkable ecological adaptability, enabling it to thrive in a vast array of environments. It is frequently encountered in agricultural landscapes, including deciduous orchards, field crops, and vineyards, as well as in native woodlands, meadows, and urban settings such as suburban gardens and parks. During late autumn, it transitions toward overwintering sites, actively seeking out dry, sheltered microhabitats within cliff crevices, tree bark, and human-made structures.
Feeding: Functions as a highly voracious, opportunistic generalist predator. While its primary prey consists of aphids, it also feeds extensively on scale insects, psyllids, mites, and the eggs of butterflies and moths. This species is notorious for intraguild predation, regularly consuming the larvae and eggs of native ladybug species, which contributes to their decline. When prey populations are scarce, it opportunistically shifts its diet to include pollen, nectar, and ripening agricultural fruits, particularly grapes, where its presence during harvesting can taint wine quality.
Behavior: Noted for its aggressive competitive nature and prominent gregarious tendencies. As temperatures drop in autumn, thousands of individuals gather on sunny, light-colored walls before migrating into interior spaces to undergo diapause. When threatened, it utilizes a defense mechanism known as reflex bleeding, secreting an amber-colored, foul-smelling hemolymph from its leg joints that contains noxious chemicals to deter predators such as birds and small rodents.
Reproduction: Exhibits an exceptionally high reproductive capacity and is multivoltine, producing several generations per year depending on environmental temperatures. Females deposit clusters of 20 to 50 bright yellow eggs on the undersides of leaves near active prey colonies. The life cycle progresses through four distinct, spiny-looking larval instars colored dark gray with orange lateral stripes, followed by an exposed pupal stage, completing the entire development from egg to adult in approximately 20 to 30 days under optimal conditions of 77 °F (25 °C).
Conservation status: Lacks any global threatened status and is generally evaluated as a species of least concern regarding extinction risk; however, it is widely designated as a highly destructive invasive alien species by multiple environmental authorities worldwide. Its rapid expansion represents a significant ecological threat to native biodiversity, aggressively outcompeting native beneficial insects and destabilizing local arthropod food webs.
