Description

It is a medium- to large-sized beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae, subfamily Cetoniinae, easily recognized by its robust, convex body and striking coloration. It displays tones ranging from metallic green to dark brown, often with iridescent reflections and lighter markings on the elytra. The body surface is usually covered with fine hairs, a characteristic feature of the species, and the mouthparts are adapted to feed on soft, juicy plant material.

Geographic distribution: It is widely distributed throughout South America, with records from several tropical and subtropical countries. Its presence is closely linked to areas with abundant vegetation and food resources, which explains its frequent occurrence in both rural and natural landscapes.

Habitat: It inhabits a wide range of environments, including forests, woodlands, rural areas, gardens, and croplands, especially those with fruit-bearing trees. Adults are often seen on flowers, ripe fruits, or on the ground, while larvae develop in substrates rich in decaying organic matter.

Feeding: This species is mainly phytophagous, feeding on ripe fruits, sap, flowers, and soft plant tissues. In the larval stage, it consumes organic debris and decaying wood, playing an important role in nutrient recycling processes within ecosystems.

Behavior: It shows predominantly diurnal habits, with adults active during the warmest hours of the day. They are commonly observed flying swiftly or feeding in groups on fallen fruits. When disturbed, they may drop to the ground or escape through a fast and noisy flight.

Reproduction: Reproduction is sexual, and females lay eggs in soil or organic substrates suitable for larval development. Larvae pass through several instars before pupation, completing a life cycle closely linked to the availability of organic matter. Development time may vary according to environmental conditions.

Conservation status: It has not been formally assessed at a global level and does not have an assigned conservation status. Due to its wide distribution and adaptability, it is not currently considered threatened, although habitat alteration may affect local populations.
