Description


Belongs to a group of robust, moderately dorsoventrally flattened beetles with an average body length ranging from 18 to 24 millimeters. It exhibits a predominantly velvety black or dark brown base coloration, intricately adorned with a highly variable pattern of yellowish, cream-colored, or grayish spots and markings on the elytra and pronotum. A key diagnostic feature is the pronounced posterior lobe of the pronotum, which almost entirely conceals the scutellum, a morphological trait typical of the tribe Gymnetini. The legs display a striking metallic luster, frequently with bronze, coppery, or greenish reflections, from which its specific epithet is derived. The antennae are short and lamellate, while the mouthparts are specialized for brush-feeding on soft or liquid organic matter. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males distinguished by a slightly concave abdominal venter and differences in the protibiae structure.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the southern cone of South America. Its presence is thoroughly documented in countries such as Argentina (particularly in central and northern provinces like Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Entre Ríos), Uruguay, Paraguay, and the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil (most notably in states like Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, and São Paulo). It spans an altitudinal range from sea level up to approximately 1,500 meters of elevation, showing high ecological flexibility in colonizing various river basins and wooded corridors within its native range.

Habitat: Inhabits a diverse array of temperate and subtropical ecosystems. It is frequently found in native woodlands, xerophytic scrub forests, gallery forests, and wooded savannas. However, it displays a high degree of synanthropy, adapting successfully to human-modified landscapes such as urban parks, backyard gardens, commercial orchards, and peri-urban agricultural zones. It shows a strong preference for areas with an abundance of decaying organic matter, leaf litter, and mature trees that provide adequate shelter and nutritional resources for both adults and larval stages.

Feeding: Adults are strictly saprophagous and nectarivorous. They feed primarily on ripe or decaying fruits, such as figs, peaches, grapes, and citrus, from which they extract sweet juices. Additionally, they are frequently observed gathering on tree trunks to feed on the fermented sap exuding from bark wounds, as well as consuming pollen and nectar from various floral structures. Conversely, the larvae (commonly known as white grubs) are detritivorous, feeding on rotting wood, accumulated leaf litter, compost, and organic soil debris, playing a crucial role in nutrient recycling within forest floors.

Behavior: Exhibits a distinctly diurnal and heliophilic activity pattern, becoming highly active on warm, sunny spring and summer days. It is an exceptionally strong and agile flier; unlike many other beetles, it can fly without fully raising its elytra, deploying its membranous hind wings through a specialized lateral notch in the elytral margin. This adaptation produces a highly streamlined, rapid, and buzzing flight reminiscent of a bumblebee. During cooler hours, nighttime, or periods of rain, it remains concealed under tree bark, deep within foliage, or buried shallowly in loose soil.

Reproduction: The lifecycle is closely synchronized with the warm and humid seasons. Following mating, which takes place on tree branches or foliage, the female searches for suitable oviposition sites rich in decomposing material. Eggs are laid individually within decaying logs, tree hollows filled with organic detritus, or domestic compost piles. After a few weeks, the C-shaped scarabaeiform larvae hatch and progress through three distinct larval instars. Before pupating, the mature larva constructs a protective mud and debris cocoon cemented with salivary secretions, where it undergoes metamorphosis, emerging as a new adult at the onset of the next warm season.

Conservation status: Has not been evaluated globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Due to its broad geographical range, notable adaptability to agricultural and suburban environments, and the absence of any major threats endangering its global populations, it is informally considered a taxon of Least concern. The stability of its populations across anthropized landscapes suggests that no specific conservation or management plans are currently required to ensure its long-term survival.
