Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its remarkably elongated silhouette and striking plumage pattern, this large passerine bird belonging to the species Gubernetes yetapa measures up to 15 to 16 inches (38 to 40 centimeters) in total length, with its extraordinary tail accounting for more than half of its size. The body features a predominantly pale gray coloration on both the mantle and underparts, contrasting sharply with dark brownish-black wings that exhibit a broad, prominent rufous-chestnut wingbar highly conspicuous during flight. A distinctive white throat is sharply bordered below by a dark chestnut-brown collar across the upper breast. Its most defining physical trait is the extremely long, deeply forked tail with blackish outer rectrices that stream elegantly as it flies. The bill is robust, slightly hooked, and colored pale pinkish-horn with a darker tip. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, primarily expressed in the female possessing slightly shorter tail streamers than the male.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the south-central regions of South America. Its geographic range encompasses southern and southeastern Brazil (ranging from Bahia and Minas Gerais southward to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, northeastern Argentina (including the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, Formosa, Chaco, and northern Entre Ríos), and northern border regions of Uruguay.

Habitat: It selectively colonizes open, wet environments. It is strongly associated with flooded grasslands, marshes, wet savannas, palm groves, and swampy margins of slow-moving rivers. The species can also be found in agricultural pastures and rural roadsides, provided there are remnants of natural wetlands and tall herbaceous vegetation available.

Feeding: Its diet is strictly insectivorous. This bird utilizes a flycatcher feeding strategy, sitting on conspicuous perches and launching aerial sallies to capture flying invertebrates, a behavior known as hawking. Its prey consists of a wide variety of insects, such as beetles, grasshoppers, flies, dragonflies, and wasps, and it occasionally descends to the ground to snatch terrestrial prey from wet mud or low grass.

Behavior: Typically encountered in territorial pairs or small family cohorts. It is highly conspicuous due to its habit of perching on exposed structures like fence posts, telephone wires, and top branches of isolated shrubs. Its flight is undulating, heavy, and punctuated by the dramatic fluttering of its long tail feathers. Pairs engage in loud, synchronized duets, producing a metallic, rhythmic vocalization that sounds like a series of sharp "chip-chip-chip" notes followed by buzzy trills.

Nesting: It constructs a bulky, open-cup nest using dry grass, roots, and plant stems, lining the inner cup with softer materials like feathers or animal hair. The nest is typically situated at low heights, hidden within thorny shrubs, dense grass tussocks, or branches emerging directly over water in marshy areas. The female typically clutches 2 to 3 eggs, which are white or creamy-white, sometimes dotted with fine reddish-brown speckles. Both parents share the duties of incubating the eggs and provisioning the nestlings.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, as it occupies a relatively large global range. Nonetheless, regional populations are vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, wetland drainage for large-scale agriculture (especially soy and eucalyptus plantations), and the intensive burning of natural grasslands, which severely limits its nesting sites.
