Description

Features a robust body heavily covered in dense setae, displaying a general coloration that ranges from dark brown to ashy black. The carapace often exhibits subtle golden or coppery reflections when exposed to direct light, while the abdomen is densely populated with urticating hairs that showcase distinctive reddish or pinkish hues. Females are notably bulkier and heavier, reaching a body length of 2.3 to 3.1 inches (excluding leg span), whereas males are considerably slenderer, presenting longer legs relative to their body size and possessing specialized tibial spurs on their first pair of legs to secure the female´s fangs during mating.

Geographical distribution: Is endemically distributed across the southern cone of South America, primarily occupying the central and Pampas regions of Argentina. Confirmed populations are widely documented within the provinces of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Córdoba, and adjacent semi-arid transition zones, where historical records indicate localized but stable communities.

Habitat: Prefers to inhabit Pampas grasslands, shrubby steppes, and xerophytic thorny forests known as the Espinal biome. This arachnid favors compact clay or sandy-loam soils that facilitate the excavation of deep, permanent underground burrows, though it also frequently colonizes natural crevices under large stones or decaying logs which offer a stable microclimate protected from extreme desiccation.

Feeding: Functions as an opportunistic, sit-and-wait predator that hunts primarily near the entrance of its burrow. Its diet is largely composed of various terrestrial invertebrates, including beetles, orthopterans (such as crickets and grasshoppers), and wild cockroaches. On rare occasions, fully grown adult specimens can overpower and consume small vertebrates, including juvenile lizards or newborn rodents, digesting their prey externally through the injection of potent liquefying enzymes.

Behavior: Exhibits a predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular activity pattern, remaining concealed deep within its silk-lined burrow during the hottest daylight hours to prevent dehydration. While generally possessing a docile temperament compared to other theraphosid species, it will adopt a threat posture by raising its forelegs when cornered, and if the threat persists, it will actively brush its abdomen with its hind legs to release a cloud of urticating bristles that cause intense irritation to the eyes and respiratory tracts of potential predators.

Reproduction: Begins its reproductive cycle following the onset of warm seasonal rains in spring and autumn, triggering mature males to abandon their burrows in active search of female pheromone trails. Upon locating a female´s burrow, the male initiates a complex courtship ritual consisting of rhythmic vibrations and leg drumming on the ground; if receptive, the female emerges for a brief copulation, after which the male must quickly retreat to avoid sexual cannibalism. The female then constructs a durable silk egg sac containing between 150 and 350 eggs, which she guards aggressively until the spiderlings emerge a few weeks later.

Conservation status: Is currently classified as Not Evaluated (NE) by the IUCN Red List due to a lack of comprehensive population studies across its natural range. However, local populations of this species are increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation caused by intensive agriculture, urban sprawl in grassland ecosystems, and illegal collection for the exotic pet trade.
