Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Vulnerable

Previously considered a subspecies of the Sharp-beaked Ground Finch (Geospiza difficilis), but genetic studies have shown it to be a full species and more closely related to the Small Ground Finch (Geospiza fuliginosa) and the Medium Ground Finch (Geospiza fortis) (Lamichhaney et al., 2015). Very similar to the Small Ground Finch, Sharp-beaked Ground Finch (Geospiza difficilis), and the Vampire Finch (Geospiza septentrionalis), but there is no difficulty in identification, as all the species it could be confused with do not inhabit Genovesa. It inhabits arid areas. Monotypic.

Geographic Distribution: Only present in Genovesa (BirdLife International, 2023).

Description extracted from: La Grotteria (2023).
