Description

Large, robust earthcreeper measuring 17 cm. Overall sandy grayish-brown plumage with a thin pale eyebrow and whitish throat. Underparts pale buff with cinnamon flanks of variable intensity depending on the subspecies. Very conspicuous rufous wing band formed by the reddish base of the remiges, accompanied by a black subterminal band; this pattern, mainly visible in flight, constitutes its most distinctive feature. Rufous tail with a black subapical band and pale tip. Short, straight bill and gray legs. Throughout its distribution, it coexists with other earthcreepers, differing by its large size, uniform breast lacking scaling, cinnamon flanks, and broad rufous areas on wings and tail visible in flight.

Subspecies:rufipennis (Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and Catamarca), fragai (Sierra de Famatina, La Rioja), and ottowi (mountain ranges of Córdoba and San Luis): browner-ochre in coloration, with redder flanks and greater extension of rufous on wings and tail. They belong to the “buzzing” vocal group, characterized by slow, deep, harsh songs. • hoyi (La Rioja, San Juan, Mendoza, and northern Neuquén), giaii (southern Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, and Santa Cruz), harrisoni (northern Chile), and fasciata (central and southern Chile): grayer in coloration, with less ochre tones and reduced rufous on wings and tail. They belong to the “trilling” vocal group, characterized by rapid, high-pitched trills. The validity of some subspecies and the boundaries between vocal groups remain under study.

Geographic distribution: Andes of Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. In Argentina, distributed from Jujuy and Salta south to Santa Cruz, including the mountain ranges of Córdoba and San Luis. Occurs between 700 and 4,500 m above sea level, although in northwestern Argentina it is usually found above 2,400 m. Performs altitudinal movements descending to lower elevations during winter.

Habitat: Open, arid, and rocky environments of mountain ranges, foothills, and high Andes. Commonly found on rocky slopes, scree fields, ravines, high plateaus, and plains with low, sparse vegetation. Frequently associated with mountain streams, dry channels, and rocky outcrops. During winter, it may descend into lower valleys.

Diet: Mainly insects and other arthropods, supplemented with seeds primarily during winter. Searches for food while walking among rocks and bare ground, using the bill and occasionally the feet to uncover hidden prey. It may lift small stones to search for insects and strike large prey, such as lizards or moths, against rocks before swallowing them. Occasionally captures insects through short flights and takes advantage of food remains of human origin.

Behavior: Mainly terrestrial, walking and running. Moves among rocks while characteristically moving neck and body, similar to a small chicken. Frequently perches on exposed rocks, fences, or posts. Performs short, low flights, generally undulating. During breeding it is usually observed alone or in pairs; outside the breeding season it may form large flocks. It is trusting, curious, and relatively tolerant of human presence.

Songs: • Buzzing group: slow, deep, harsh series, such as “GRRI-GRRI-GRRI,” resembling a prolonged rocky buzzing sound. • Trilling group: rapid, high-pitched trill composed of accelerated notes culminating in a sustained vibration.

Nesting: Nests in crevices, caves, or tunnels excavated into earthen banks, ravines, or rocky areas. The nest chamber is located at the end of the tunnel and lined with grasses, wool, hair, and feathers. Clutch size ranges from 2 to 5 white eggs. During the breeding season, males perform display flights accompanied by vocalizations.

Conservation status: Has no threat category designation, being a common and widely distributed species. Although it faces no significant threats at a global scale, locally it may be affected by mining activities, overgrazing, and other alterations to high Andean and mountain habitats.
