Description


Belongs to a group of medium-sized, aquatic birds characterized by a robust silhouette and a total body length ranging from 36 to 43 centimeters. The plumage is predominantly a deep slate-gray, transitioning to an almost solid black on the head and neck. A defining diagnostic feature is its narrow, pointed frontal shield, which displays a vibrant bright red or orange-red coloration. This shield sits directly above a bill that is primarily yellow-green with a distinct red base. The lateral undertail coverts are a contrasting pure white, which is highly visible when the bird swims or performs territorial displays. Its eyes feature a striking ruby-red iris. The legs and lobed feet are greenish-gray, adorned with a highly distinctive red or orange band at the tibiotarsal joint, from which its common name is derived.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide geographical range in southern South America. It is commonly distributed throughout central and southern Chile (from the Coquimbo region south to Tierra del Fuego), across most of Argentina (excluding extreme high-altitude Andean sectors), throughout Uruguay, in southern Paraguay, and into the southernmost state of Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul). Vagrant populations have also been documented in the Falkland Islands.

Habitat: Inhabits diverse freshwater wetlands, including shallow lakes, lagoons, marshes, and slow-moving rivers with abundant emergent vegetation. It prefers environments heavily vegetated with reeds (Scirpus) and cattails (Typha), which offer essential cover from predators and optimal nesting sites. It is predominantly a lowland species but can be found in mountain valleys of moderate elevation.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous diet that leans heavily toward herbivory. It feeds extensively on aquatic vegetation, algae, seeds, and duckweed (Lemna). This plant material is supplemented with protein-rich animal matter, including aquatic insects, larvae, snails, and small crustaceans, which it gathers by dabbing, filter-feeding on the water´s surface, or executing shallow dives.

Behavior: Demonstrates strong swimming and diving capabilities, spending most of its active hours in open water. Outside the breeding season, it is a highly gregarious bird, forming large multispecies flocks alongside Fulica leucoptera and Fulica armillata. Taking flight requires a long, splashing run across the water´s surface while flapping its wings vigorously. During the breeding season, pairs become fiercely territorial, using physical posturing and loud, metallic calls to expel intruders from their territory.

Nesting: Commences with the construction of a large, floating platform nest, which is typically constructed of dry rushes, reeds, and other aquatic plants. This structure is securely anchored to standing emergent vegetation to prevent it from drifting away. Both sexes participate in nest building. The female typically lays a clutch of 4 to 8 eggs, which are buff-colored or light brown, covered in fine dark spots. Both parents share incubation duties, which last between 24 and 26 days. The precocial chicks hatch covered in black down and leave the nest shortly after hatching, relying on parental guidance for food and protection.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its populations are currently stable and widespread, localized threats persist, primarily driven by the drainage of wetlands, water pollution from agricultural runoff, and habitat fragmentation.
