Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a robust, rounded body measuring 36 to 38 centimeters in length, with a wingspan of 70 to 80 centimeters and a body mass ranging between 600 and 900 grams. This rail, scientifically classified as Fulica atra, features plumage that is almost entirely sooty black or dark slate grey, contrasting starkly with a prominent bright white frontal shield and bill. The eyes are a striking deep red in mature adults. Lacking webbed feet like ducks, this species possesses specialized lobed toes shaded in greenish-grey, which allow for efficient swimming and walking over soft mud or floating vegetation. Juveniles present a duller, brownish-grey coloration with a whitish throat and lack the developed white facial shield.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Old World, with a vast range spanning Europe, Asia, northern Africa, and Australasia. Northern and eastern populations, subject to harsh winters where water bodies freeze, are highly migratory, traveling south and west toward the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and southern Asia. Conversely, populations residing in temperate maritime zones remain sedentary throughout the year.

Habitat: Prefers shallow, still, or slow-flowing freshwater environments, including lakes, ponds, marshes, reservoirs, and gravel pits. It requires open water areas for swimming and foraging, but these must be bordered by dense emergent vegetation like reeds and rushes, which offer essential shelter. During the non-breeding season, it can also be found in brackish waters, including estuaries and sheltered coastal bays.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous and opportunistic diet. It feeds extensively on aquatic vegetation, consuming macrophytes, algae, seeds, and tender shoots. This plant matter is supplemented with animal protein, such as aquatic insects, mollusks, small fish, worms, and occasionally amphibian larvae. To forage, it regularly performs shallow dives, popping up like a cork, and frequently engages in kleptoparasitism, stealing food from other waterfowl.

Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressively combative during the breeding season, it defends its territory with vigorous splashing displays, loud vocalizations, and physical fights where individuals lean back and strike with their sharp claws. While swimming, it displays a distinctive rhythmic head-bobbing motion. To take flight, it must run laboriously across the water´s surface, pattering with its feet for a considerable distance. In winter, however, this aggressive nature shifts, and the species becomes highly gregarious, forming massive flocks known as "rafts" on large bodies of water.

Nesting: Breeding begins in early spring, during which both partners construct a bulky, platform-like nest made of reeds, rushes, and decaying vegetation. This structure is typically floating but anchored to emergent plants or semi-submerged branches. It is a monogamous breeder, with females laying a clutch of 6 to 10 pale beige eggs speckled with dark brown dots. Both parents share incubation duties for 21 to 24 days. The precocial chicks hatch with a bizarre appearance, featuring bright red and orange downy feathers around their heads, and are carefully tended to by both adults until fledging.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its extensive distribution and large, stable population trends globally. Despite this favorable status, local populations face threats from wetland drainage, water pollution, avian botulism outbreaks, and lead poisoning resulting from the ingestion of spent gunshot in hunting zones.
