Description

Represents an imposing member of the Sphingidae family, characterized by a robust, aerodynamic body and a wingspan measuring between 80 and 110 mm. The forewings display a complex pattern of olive-brown and grayish-brown tones with highly defined dark transverse lines, accompanied by a conspicuous discal spot. The hindwings exhibit a striking pinkish or reddish coloration along the anal region and inner margin, giving the species its specific epithet. The abdomen is thick and conical, decorated with light and dark longitudinal stripes that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark. The antennae are pectinate in males and filiform in females, ending in a characteristic apical hook common to these moths.

Geographical distribution: Is primarily distributed across the South American continent, spanning a vast territory that ranges from central and northern Argentina, through Uruguay, eastern Paraguay, and the central and southern regions of Brazil, extending into the humid zones of Bolivia. Its presence is strongly associated with river basins and forested corridors within these temperate and subtropical nations.

Habitat: Prefers humid lowland forests, Chaco-Pampean transition zones, gallery forests, edges of secondary woodlands, and riparian ecosystems. However, it displays remarkable ecological plasticity, successfully adapting to suburban environments, parks, public gardens, and agricultural landscapes where its larval host plants and nectar-rich floral resources are abundant.

Feeding: During the adult stage, this species is an active and efficient pollinator that feeds exclusively on floral nectar from plants with deep tubular corollas. It uses its long proboscis to feed while hovering mid-air in front of flowers belonging to genera such as Nicotiana, Petunia, and Ipomoea. Conversely, the larval stage is strictly phytophagous, showing a marked dietary preference for plants of the Vitaceae family, particularly the genera Cissus and Vitis (grapes), as well as members of the Onagraceae family, such as Ludwigia.

Behavior: Displays distinctly crepuscular and nocturnal habits, initiating foraging and mate-seeking flights during dusk. It possesses an extremely rapid and precise flight capability, allowing it to evade aerial predators such as bats. During daylight hours, it remains motionless on tree trunks or within dense foliage, relying on its protective crypsis to avoid detection. It exhibits a strong attraction to artificial light sources, a phenomenon frequently observed in urbanized areas that often facilitates scientific recording.

Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with a complex chemical communication system based on the release of sex pheromones by virgin females during the night. Following copulation, the female oviposits single, spherical, pale green eggs on the underside of host plant leaves. The larvae hatch after a few days and undergo several developmental instars; young caterpillars possess a prominent caudal horn that transitions into a glossy, eye-like tubercle in the final instar. Upon reaching maximum growth, they descend to the ground to burrow and form a naked subterranean pupa within a compacted soil chamber, where they undergo complete metamorphosis.

Conservation status: Currently, this taxon is not listed under any threat category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is generally considered a common and stable species throughout its native range; however, localized population declines may occur due to habitat fragmentation, heavy use of agricultural pesticides, and light pollution in rapidly expanding urban centers.
