This is a medium-sized odonate species belonging to the Libellulidae family, characterized by a pronounced sexual dimorphism in its adult stage. Mature males exhibit an extremely striking body coloration, with an abdomen of an intense coral red or carmine hue, and a thorax that acquires dark reddish undertones with age due to a process of pruinescence. Their large compound eyes are dark reddish-brown on the upper surface. Conversely, females and immature males present a chromatic pattern dominated by yellowish and ochre tones, accompanied by diffuse black longitudinal bands and spots on the lateral sides of the abdomen. The wings are entirely membranous and hyaline, featuring a small golden amber spot at the base of the hindwings, and an elongated pterostigma that varies from yellow to red depending on the maturity of the individual. Their average wingspan ranges between 50 and 60 millimeters, while the total body length is approximately 35 to 42 millimeters.
Geographical distribution: This dragonfly is predominantly native to the southern cone of South America. It is a highly common and native species in Chile, where it is recorded continuously from the Atacama region to the Aysén region. Likewise, its presence is widely documented in Argentina, covering the Patagonian provinces, the central region, and the northwest of the country. Additional, albeit more scattered, records exist in temperate and subtropical areas of Bolivia, Peru, and southern Brazil, demonstrating a remarkable dispersal capability across the continent.
Habitat: This species primarily colonizes lentic freshwater environments at low to moderate altitudes. It is common to find this taxon in temporary or permanent lagoons, marshes, flood pools, artificial wetlands, irrigation canals, and riverbanks with extremely slow currents. It shows a strong preference for standing water bodies that possess abundant palustrine and floating vegetation, such as reeds, cattails, and aquatic weeds, which serve both as perches for resting adults and as shelter for developing nymphs.
Feeding: It is an obligate predator throughout its entire life cycle, exhibiting strictly carnivorous feeding habits. During its aquatic nymph stage, it utilizes a modified, protractile labium called a mask to capture a wide variety of prey, including mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, aquatic mites, and occasionally amphibian tadpoles. In its adult stage, it becomes an agile aerial predator that hunts on the wing using the perch-and-sally method. Its diet consists mainly of soft-bodied flying insects, such as dipterans, microlepidopterans, aphids, and other smaller odonates.
Behavior: It is a highly active, diurnal, and heliophilic insect, showing its peak dynamism during hours of maximum solar radiation. Males are intensely territorial and spend a significant portion of the day actively patrolling water margins or perched on strategic structures, such as dry branches or emergent vegetation, from which they defend their territory against rival males and locate receptive females. Their flight is fast, agile, and hovering, capable of abrupt aerial maneuvers. Females, conversely, maintain a more discreet profile, staying away from the water in surrounding vegetation until mating.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with courtship and the subsequent formation of the copulatory wheel in the air, which stabilizes as a tandem before settling on vegetation. After fertilization, the female performs exophytic oviposition. To achieve this, she hovers over the water´s surface, making rapid vertical movements and repeatedly tapping her abdomen against the water to release the fertilized eggs near aquatic plants. During this process, the male often conducts active aerial guarding, either remaining in tandem or hovering closely nearby to prevent interference from rival males. The nymphs are entirely aquatic and undergo multiple molts before their emergence and final metamorphosis.
Conservation status: This species is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Due to its vast geographical distribution, its capacity to adapt to anthropized environments such as agricultural reservoirs, and the general stability of its populations, it does not face critical threats of extinction in the short term. Nonetheless, the chemical contamination of freshwater sources, the excessive use of agricultural pesticides, and the systematic drainage of wetlands represent localized risk factors that degrade the quality of its natural habitats.
