Description


Belongs to a highly distinctive family of dipterans known as hoverflies, characterized by an exceptional morphological adaptation that mimics stinging hymenopterans.

It is a medium-sized insect measuring between 11 and 14 millimeters in length, showcasing a robust and slightly hairy body. Its most diagnostic feature is the unique pattern of its compound eyes, which display five vertical, dark brown to reddish stripes against a yellowish-bronze background, earning it the common name of band-eyed hoverfly. The thorax is predominantly metallic black with golden or grayish hairs, and the scutellum is a contrasting translucent yellow. The abdomen is adorned with alternating black and orange-yellow transverse bands, creating an effective Batesian mimicry. The wings are clear with a characteristic false vein, known as the vena spuria, which is a key identification key for the family Syrphidae.

Geographical distribution: This species is native to the Western Palearctic region, widely distributed across Southern Europe, the Mediterranean basin, North Africa, the Middle East, and extending eastward into India. However, due to accidental human introduction, it has successfully established self-sustaining populations in the Western Hemisphere. It is now commonly recorded in the southern United States (specifically in California and Florida), throughout Mexico, and in several South American countries, including Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, demonstrating an impressive ecological plasticity and invasive potential.

Habitat: It is typically found in open and semi-open landscapes where flowering plants and aquatic resources coexist. Common habitats include agricultural fields, suburban gardens, urban parks, meadows, and riparian corridors. Because of the specific environmental requirements of its larval stage, this fly is closely associated with wetland environments, such as marshes, irrigation ditches, temporary pools, and areas near organic waste or livestock runoff where water stagnation occurs.

Feeding: Adults are strictly floricolous, relying entirely on nectar and pollen from a diverse range of flowering plants. They show a strong preference for yellow and white flowers belonging to the Apiaceae, Asteraceae, and Brassicaceae families, frequently visiting species like ivy (Hedera helix) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare). This food source provides the essential energy for flight and the nutrients required for reproduction. In contrast, the larvae are saprophagous filter-feeders, living in liquid or semi-liquid mediums where they consume bacteria, microalgae, and decomposing organic detritus.

Behavior: It is characterized by its exceptionally agile and precise flight, with the ability to hover motionless in mid-air before darting away or landing. This heliophilous species is most active during warm, sunny hours, often basking on leaves to regulate its body temperature. Males are highly territorial, defending specific sunny patches and intercepting passing females or chasing away rival males. Its Batesian mimicry is highly effective, as both its coloration and its buzzing flight pattern closely resemble those of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera), deterring potential predators like birds and spiders.

Reproduction: The life cycle is holometabolous, progressing through the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Mating behavior typically begins in flight or on sunlit foliage near suitable oviposition sites. Gravid females deposit their elongated, white eggs in clusters close to highly eutrophic water, liquid manure, or waterlogged mud. The hatched larvae, known as rat-tailed maggots, possess a unique long, telescoping respiratory siphon at the posterior end of their body, which functions as a snorkel, allowing them to extract oxygen from the air while remaining submerged in highly polluted, oxygen-depleted waters. Once fully grown, the larva crawls to drier soil or debris to form a hardened brown puparium, from which the adult fly emerges.

Conservation status: It has not been formally assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and does not currently appear on any threatened species lists. It is considered a highly abundant, common, and resilient species whose populations are stable or expanding globally, often benefiting from human-modified landscapes and acting as an important generalist pollinator.
