Description


Characterized by an elongated and oval body shape, this beetle stands out among other members of its family, which are typically more spherical. Its body size ranges between 3.5 and 5.5 millimeters in length. The dorsal coloration consists of a shiny black background decorated with a distinct pattern of spots that vary from pale yellow to reddish-orange. The pronotum is black with yellowish lateral margins, while the elytra feature circular or ovoid spots that often connect with each other, a morphological trait that defines the specific identity of Eriopis connexa. The head is small and partially retracted under the pronotum, equipped with short clavate antennae and powerful chewing mouthparts adapted for predation. Its legs are dark brown to black, designed for rapid movements across plant surfaces.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed throughout South America, with stable populations recorded in countries such as Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. Its presence is particularly dominant in the temperate and subtropical regions of the Southern Cone, showcasing a high altitudinal dispersion capacity that allows it to colonize Andean valleys and low-altitude coastal plains.

Habitat: It occurs in a wide variety of terrestrial ecosystems, showing a strong preference for agricultural systems, horticultural crops, grasslands, forest edges, urban gardens, and disturbed areas with abundant herbaceous vegetation. It is an organism of great ecological importance in alfalfa, corn, wheat, soybean, and fruit orchards, where it rapidly colonizes foliage to hunt for prey, adapting well to both dry and humid climates within the Neotropical region.

Feeding: It is an extremely active generalist predator, primarily classified as aphidophagous, since its diet consists mainly of various species of aphids. However, its dietary breadth is wide, incorporating mites, scale insects, thrips, small larvae, insect eggs, and occasionally pollen and floral nectar as alternative energy sources when primary prey is scarce. This dietary flexibility allows the species to maintain stable populations throughout the year.

Behavior: It exhibits strictly diurnal habits, displaying intense foraging and searching activity during hours of high solar radiation. It possesses a remarkable flight capability, which facilitates the colonization of new patches of vegetation infested with prey. During the colder winter months, adults enter a state of seasonal diapause, gathering in large aggregations under tree bark, rock crevices, or dry organic matter to shield themselves from frost. Cannibalistic behavior toward eggs and young larvae has also been documented under high population density and low food resources.

Reproduction: The life cycle is holometabolous, progressing through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The reproductive process begins with courtship and mating on plant surfaces. The fertilized female deposits eggs in compact clusters of a bright yellow or orange color, strategically placing them on the underside of leaves near active aphid colonies to ensure immediate food availability for the offspring. After a short incubation period, highly active campodeiform larvae of dark grey coloration with orange spots emerge, undergoing four larval instars before attaching to a leaf surface to pupate, eventually emerging as fully formed adults.

Conservation status: It is not currently evaluated under the global categories of the IUCN Red List, largely due to its extensive geographical distribution and high population density across South America. As an highly effective natural biological control agent against agricultural pests, its populations are considered stable and beneficial, although they face local threats from the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum chemical pesticides in conventional farming.
