Description


Characterized by a highly cylindrical, slender body, this species is structurally adapted for a specialized subterranean existence. The skull is compact and heavily ossified to facilitate burrowing, while the eyes are vestigial, appearing as dark spots covered by thick protective scales that restrict vision to basic light-dark perception. Its dorsal coloration is predominantly dark brown to black, contrasted by a distinct pattern of cream to white spots localized on the snout, the upper head scales, and the distal tip of the tail, which serves as a key diagnostic feature. Adults typically reach a total length of 12 to 18 centimeters. The body scales are smooth, glossy, and closely overlapping, minimizing friction as the animal navigates loose soil. The tail is extremely short and terminates in a tiny spine-like scale used for leverage.

Geographical distribution: Occurs natively within the central and southern territories of South America. Its geographic range encompasses northern and central Argentina (including provinces such as Córdoba, Tucumán, San Luis, and Santiago del Estero), western Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia, and southwestern Brazil (specifically within the state of Mato Grosso do Sul). This distribution pattern aligns closely with the major dry forest and scrubland biomes of the southern Neotropics, where loose and sandy soils predominate.

Habitat: Prefers semi-arid, arid, and seasonal environments, finding its optimal ecological niche within the Dry Chaco, the Espinal, and the Monte shrublands. The species is restricted to microhabitats featuring soft, sandy, or loamy soils that facilitate burrowing. Individuals are frequently uncovered beneath embedded stones, decomposing logs, and leaf litter, or found directly inside the underground galleries of ant and termite nests where microclimatic conditions remain stable and humid.

Feeding: Functions as a highly specialized consumer, exhibiting strict myrmecophagous and termitophagous dietary preferences. Its food intake consists almost exclusively of ants and termites, targeting their larvae, pupae, and eggs. The snake utilizes keen chemosensory abilities, mediated by its vomeronasal system, to locate active insect trails. Once inside a nest, it feeds efficiently while relying on specialized cloacal secretions and smooth scales to deter defensive attacks from worker and soldier insects.

Behavior: Exhibits secretive, fossorial, and primarily nocturnal habits, making field encounters rare unless heavy rains force individuals to the surface. It navigates subterranean corridors using lateral undulations, anchoring its body with the terminal tail spine to push through packed earth. When threatened, it displays a defensive repertoire that includes coiling, thrashing, emitting a foul-smelling cloacal discharge, and executing tail-display behaviors (where the white-tipped tail mimics the head to confuse potential predators).

Reproduction: Employs an oviparous reproductive strategy tailored to survive the seasonal dryness of its geographic range. Females deposit a single annual clutch consisting of 2 to 5 elongated, thin-shelled eggs. Oviposition takes place in deep underground chambers, soil crevices, or abandoned insect mounds, where ambient humidity is naturally regulated, ensuring the developing embryos are protected from desiccation during the incubation period.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Least Concern (LC) or not highly threatened due to its extensive geographical distribution and adaptable underground lifestyle. Nonetheless, localized populations are susceptible to habitat degradation driven by intensive agricultural conversion, monoculture expansion, and soil compaction, which disrupt the subsoil structure and decrease the abundance of social insect colonies essential for its survival.
