Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a slender silhouette, this medium-sized avian taxon typically measures between 40 and 42 centimeters in total length. Its plumage is predominantly dull green with a distinctive scaled pattern created by dark narrow margins on the feathers. Notable facial markings include a dull crimson patch on the forehead, lores, and around the orbital region, accompanied by a variable reddish patch on the central abdomen. Its most remarkable morphological feature is the highly elongated, narrow, and extended upper mandible, which functions as an evolutionary specialization for extracting seeds and digging. The naked orbital ring is pale grey, housing an iris with a reddish-brown coloration.

Geographical distribution: Endemic to the southwestern portion of South America, its range is confined to Chile, stretching from the Valparaíso region in the north down to the Aysén region and the Chiloé Archipelago in the south. It is widely distributed across both the Andean slopes and the Coastal Range, showing a continuous presence throughout the southern temperate zone.

Habitat: Strongly associated with temperate humid ecosystems, it occurs primarily in Valdivian temperate rainforests, old-growth forests dominated by Nothofagus species, and high-altitude coniferous forests of Araucaria araucana. It spans an elevational gradient from sea level up to 2,000 meters, frequently utilizing forest edges, clearings, agricultural valleys, and occasionally urban parks.

Feeding: Exhibits a highly specialized herbivorous and granivorous diet. It relies heavily on the seeds of the monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), which it extracts with high precision from female cones using its specialized bill. Its foraging strategy also includes consuming seeds of Nothofagus, fresh leaf buds, berries, and subterranean bulbs or roots that it unearths from soft soil. In agricultural landscapes, it opportunistically feeds on cereal crops such as wheat and maize.

Behavior: Highly gregarious and intensely social, it is rarely seen alone, preferring to travel in massive, noisy flocks that can comprise hundreds or thousands of individuals. These flocks are known for their loud, harsh, metallic screeching calls emitted continuously during flight. It exhibits diurnal activity patterns, characterized by synchronized departures from communal roosts in high tree canopies to lower foraging grounds at dawn.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs seasonally from November to February. The species utilizes natural cavities in mature, decaying forest trees, particularly Nothofagus and Araucaria, though it occasionally nests in rocky crevices. The female lays a clutch of 4 to 6 white eggs directly on the decomposed wood dust at the cavity bottom. Incubation is performed chiefly by the female for about 24 to 26 days, during which the male provides food and maintains a vigilant defense of the nest site.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although the species remains relatively common and locally abundant throughout its range, populations are vulnerable to the degradation of old-growth forests, habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, illegal capture for the pet trade, and targeted persecution in farming areas.
