Description


Features a slender body and wings displaying a predominantly rusty reddish-brown or bright coppery-orange coloration, adorned with an intricate pattern of dark brown or blackish transverse wavy lines and small spots across both surfaces. The wingspan of this delicate species ranges from 25 to 32 millimeters. The underside of the wings exhibits a lighter, tawny-orange hue with the same dark markings but defined with a softer contrast. A subtle sexual dimorphism is present; males tend to display more vivid, fiery tones on the dorsum, whereas females feature slightly more rounded wings and duller, more earth-toned backgrounds. Their antennae are thin, ringed with alternating black and white micro-bands, and terminate in a well-defined antennal club typical of the Riodinidae family.

Geographical distribution: Occurs primarily in the forested ecoregions of South America, with abundant records in southeastern and southern Brazil (spanning from Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and the province of Misiones in northeastern Argentina. Its geographic range is closely linked to the Atlantic Forest biome (Mata Atlântica), where the specific humidity and temperature levels favor its biological development and population stability throughout the year.

Habitat: Inhabits mainly the undergrowth and edges of humid tropical forests, gallery forests, and secondary woodland formations in stages of ecological recovery. It shows a clear preference for forest clearings where sunlight filters through the canopy, as well as forest trails with dense shrubby vegetation. This insect can be found from sea level up to moderate elevations of approximately 1200 meters above sea level, favoring microclimates with high humidity and shade that prevent the desiccation of its immature stages.

Feeding: As an adult, it feeds primarily on the nectar of small wild flowers, displaying a marked preference for the Asteraceae and Verbenaceae families. It also actively engages in mud-puddling behavior, absorbing mineral salts and moisture directly from damp soil, river sands, and decaying organic matter. During the larval stage, its diet is strictly phytophagous, consuming the tender leaves of host plants, which are frequently associated with shrubs of the Primulaceae and Myrtaceae families.

Behavior: Is characterized by an extremely rapid, erratic, and low-altitude flight, making it difficult to follow visually within the dense undergrowth. Males are territorial and exhibit perching behavior, settling on the upper leaves of sun-exposed shrubs to defend their territory and spot potential mates or rivals. When resting, they typically spread their wings completely flat or retreat underneath leaves with semi-open wings to achieve camouflage against visual predators of the forest.

Reproduction: Is an oviparous species in which the female deposits individual eggs on the underside of the host plant´s young leaves to ensure immediate food resources for the emerging larvae. The eggs are hemispherical and feature a corrugated pattern with microscopic longitudinal ridges. Upon hatching, the larvae progress through several developmental instars, displaying bodies covered with fine setae and greenish or brownish colorations that allow them to blend with the foliage. The reproductive cycle culminates in the formation of a chrysalis or pupa, which is secured to the substrate by a silk girdle until the adult emerges.

Conservation status: Has not been globally evaluated under the IUCN Red List, thus lacking an official international conservation category. Nevertheless, local populations experience continuous pressure due to habitat fragmentation in the South American Atlantic Forest. The loss of native forest cover and the widespread use of agricultural pesticides constitute the most severe threats to the long-term survival of Emesis russula.
