Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits a highly distinctive silhouette characterized by an extraordinarily deeply forked tail and long, slender, pointed wings. Its plumage presents a stark and elegant contrast, featuring a snow-white head, neck, and underparts, which stand out against the deep black back, wings, and tail. This medium-sized raptor measures between 50 and 65 centimeters in length, possesses a remarkable wingspan of 112 to 136 centimeters, and weighs between 370 and 600 grams. The eyes are dark brown, bordered by a thin, dark orbital ring, and the sharp, hooked bill is black with a bluish-gray cere. Sexual dimorphism is virtually absent, though females are often marginally larger than males.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast range across the Americas, displaying both resident and highly migratory patterns. The northern migratory populations breed primarily in the southeastern United States, particularly in coastal states like Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana. These northern breeders undergo a remarkable long-distance migration to wintering grounds in South America, especially in Brazil, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Conversely, resident populations reside year-round throughout Central America and parts of tropical South America, including the Amazon Basin and the Guiana Shield.

Habitat: Inhabits predominantly lowland wet forests, forested wetlands, wooded swamps, riparian corridors, and pine flatwoods. It requires habitats with tall, mature trees such as loblolly pines (Pinus taeda) or bald cypresses (Taxodium distichum) in North America, and various tall canopy species in the tropics, for nesting. These nesting sites must be adjacent to wide open areas, wet savannas, or marshes that provide suitable foraging grounds.

Feeding: Serves as an opportunistic and agile predator, feeding extensively on large flying insects such as dragonflies, beetles, cicadas, and wasps, which are captured and consumed entirely on the wing. Additionally, it regularly preys upon small arboreal vertebrates, including tree frogs, chameleons and other lizards, small snakes, and the nestlings or eggs of other bird species, which it deftly plucks from the forest canopy without landing.

Behavior: Renowned as one of the most aerial and graceful raptors, spending the vast majority of its active hours soaring effortlessly on thermal updrafts. It displays highly gregarious behavior, often foraging, roosting, and migrating in loose social flocks. An iconic behavioral trait is its method of drinking, which involves swooping low over water bodies to skim the surface with its lower mandible to scoop up water while maintaining continuous flight.

Nesting: Commences with spectacular aerial courtship displays involving synchronized dives and rolls. Both sexes cooperate to construct a sturdy platform nest using twigs, spanish moss, and lichens, typically positioned in the topmost branches of emergent canopy trees. The female typically lays 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs blotched with dark brown. Incubation is shared by both parents and lasts for 28 to 31 days, with the altricial young remaining in the nest for 36 to 42 days before fledging.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. While its global population appears stable, regional populations in the northern reaches of its breeding range have historically suffered severe contractions due to forest fragmentation, urban sprawl, and the draining of vital wetland ecosystems, making local habitat preservation efforts essential.
