Description


Belongs to one of the most species-rich families of Neotropical passerines, standing out as a relatively large representative of its genus, reaching an average body length of 18 centimeters. Its upperparts are predominantly finished in an olive-gray tone, accompanied by a crown that features a subtle and mostly concealed white patch, visible primarily when the bird is excited or alarmed. The throat and upper breast exhibit a pale gray wash that gradually transitions into a light, delicate yellow wash on the belly. The wings are characterized by a dark brown color, adorned with two to three distinct whitish wing bars and pale margins on the secondary feathers. Its bill is short and robust, being blackish with a lighter base on the lower mandible, and is framed by a faint, narrow white eye-ring. This set of features helps distinguish it from other structurally similar sympatric species like Elaenia flavogaster, which typically displays a more prominent and frequent crest.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a broad range across the South American continent, exhibiting a complex seasonal presence. Its breeding grounds are situated in central and southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. As an austral migrant, this species undertakes significant seasonal movements during the southern winter, traveling northward to occupy regions within the Amazon basin, eastern Peru, eastern Ecuador, and parts of southern Colombia before returning south for the breeding season in the spring.

Habitat: Thrives in a variety of wooded environments, including gallery forests, humid forest edges, secondary growth woodlands, riverine thickets, semi-open woodlands, and mature, tree-rich suburban parks. It shows a strong preference for the middle and upper canopies of trees, rarely descending to the dense, shaded understory or venturing into completely open grasslands lacking vertical arboreal structures.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous diet that heavily relies on both frugivory and insectivory. It consumes a diverse array of small wild fruits and berries, which are plucked directly from twigs and branches, and supplements this diet with arthropods, notably beetles, flies, and small wasps. Foraging methods include gleaning insects from leaf surfaces and executing short, agile aerial sallies to capture prey in mid-air.

Behavior: Typically encountered as a solitary individual or in loose pairs, maintaining a low profile within the canopy foliage during most of the day. It is most easily detected by its vocalizations, which consist of a husky, buzzy, and descending whistle repeated during the early morning hours. It is an austral migratory species, with individuals undertaking long-distance seasonal flights, primarily during the night to minimize predation risks and optimize energy expenditure.

Nesting: The breeding cycle begins with the construction of a cup-shaped nest, which is a neat, open cup structure woven securely into the fork of a horizontal branch in the middle stratum of the forest. The female builds this nest using plant fibers, mosses, lichens, and spiderwebs to bind the materials together and camouflage the exterior. The clutch typically consists of two to three creamy-white eggs, speckled with reddish-brown and lavender spots concentrated at the larger end. Incubation is carried out solely by the female for about 14 to 16 days, after which both parents actively participate in feeding and protecting the nestlings until they fledge.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it faces localized threats due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation throughout its range, its overall population remains stable, benefited by its ability to utilize secondary habitats, forest edges, and human-modified green spaces.
