Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized as a medium-sized passerine bird belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family, this member of the Elaenia flavogaster species measures approximately 16 to 16.5 centimeters in length and weighs between 21 and 29 grams. The upperparts are mostly olive-brown, which contrasts with a pale grayish throat and breast, transitioning into a diagnostic pale yellow belly. The head features a prominent, bushy crest that is frequently raised to reveal a semi-concealed white crown patch. It possesses a thin, indistinct whitish eye-ring and two whitish wing bars on its dusky wings. The bill is relatively short and pointed, with a dark upper mandible and a flesh-colored base on the lower mandible.

Geographical distribution: Occupies an extensive neotropical range extending from southern Mexico through Central America into South America, reaching as far south as northern Argentina, Uruguay, and central Brazil. It is widely recorded in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and the Guianas, but is notably absent from the dense, continuous forests of the central Amazon basin and the highest elevations of the Andes.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits semi-open country, second-growth scrub, forest edges, savannas (such as the Brazilian cerrado), agricultural clearings with scattered trees, suburban parks, and residential gardens. It thrives in disturbed and transitional habitats rather than dense primary rainforests, spanning elevations from sea level up to approximately 2000 meters.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous diet that heavily relies on both insects and small fruits. It captures winged insects, including beetles, flies, and wasps, through brief sallying flights from prominent perches or by gleaning prey directly from leaves and twigs. Small berries, particularly from the Melastomataceae and Loranthaceae families, constitute a vital portion of its diet, making this species an important seed disperser within its ecological communities.

Behavior: Highly active, conspicuous, and remarkably vocal. It is often observed perched prominently on exposed branches, uttering its characteristic buzzy, wheezy songs and harsh calls to signal territory ownership. During territorial disputes or when threatened, it exhibits highly aggressive behaviors, erects its crown crest to flash the white patch, and vigorously drives away intruders, including much larger avian species.

Nesting: Constructs a neat, cup-shaped nest placed securely in the fork of a tree or shrub branch, typically situated at heights ranging from 2 to 10 meters above the ground. The nest is built using twigs, plant fibers, moss, and lichens, and is heavily lined with soft feathers and animal hair for insulation. The clutch typically consists of 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs blotched with reddish-brown and lilac markings. Incubation is performed solely by the female for 14 to 15 days, while both parents actively participate in brooding and feeding the nestlings until they fledge at approximately 17 to 18 days of age.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Due to its tolerance of human-modified landscapes, its population trends appear stable, and its vast geographical distribution protects it from immediate conservation threats.
