This is a medium-sized, elegant ardeid measuring between 55 and 65 centimeters in length, with a wingspan of 88 to 106 centimeters and a weight ranging from 350 to 550 grams. It displays an entirely snow-white plumage that contrasts sharply with its long, slender black bill. Its legs are remarkably long and black, ending in distinctive, bright yellow feet that serve as a primary diagnostic feature for field identification. During the breeding season, adults undergo a dramatic physical transformation, developing two long, slender nape plumes and delicate, lace-like feathers (aigrettes) on their back and breast. Additionally, the bare skin of the lores, which is normally greyish-green, temporarily shifts to a vibrant pink, red, or bright yellow color.
Geographical distribution: It exhibits an extraordinarily vast global range, extending across southern Europe, Africa, southern and eastern Asia, and Oceania. Over the last few decades, it has successfully colonized northern Europe and demonstrated a noticeable expansion into the Americas, with regular sightings and emerging breeding populations in the Caribbean islands and coastal areas of South America. Populations nesting in the temperate regions of the Palearctic are highly migratory, traveling south to winter in the Mediterranean basin, sub-Saharan Africa, and southern Asia, whereas tropical and subtropical populations tend to be sedentary or engage in localized dispersive movements tied to water availability.
Habitat: It frequents a wide variety of shallow aquatic environments, showing a preference for both freshwater and brackish or saltwater wetlands. It is commonly found in estuaries, salt marshes, coastal lagoons, mangroves, shallow lakes, slow-flowing rivers, and mudflats. The species also readily adapts to human-altered landscapes, frequently foraging in rice paddies, salt pans, drainage canals, and aquaculture ponds. It requires shallow water bodies for hunting, paired with nearby tall vegetation, trees, or bushes to provide roosting and nesting sites.
Feeding: Its diet is highly carnivorous and opportunistic, consisting of whatever small aquatic prey is most abundant in its immediate vicinity. It feeds primarily on small fish, crustaceans (such as shrimp and crabs), aquatic and terrestrial insects, amphibians (frogs and tadpoles), mollusks, and occasionally small reptiles or worms. To capture its prey, it utilizes several active foraging techniques that showcase its high level of agility and adaptability in different wetland systems.
Behavior: This species is characterized by its dynamic, energetic, and highly social lifestyle. Unlike larger herons that hunt through motionless stalking, this taxon engages in active pursuit, running through shallow waters, turning abruptly, and flapping its wings to startle prey. A diagnostic behavioral trait involves using its bright yellow feet to disturb the substrate, flushing out hidden organisms from the mud to be instantly skewered by its dagger-like bill. It is highly gregarious, often feeding in loose groups and roosting in large communal nocturnal roosts alongside other wading bird species.
Nesting: It breeds in dense colonies, often joining mixed-species heronries with other herons, egrets, and ibises. The nest is a bulky, platform-like structure built of twigs, reeds, and branches, typically positioned in trees, dense bushes, reedbeds, or bamboo groves near or over water. The female lays a clutch of three to five pale blue-green eggs. Both parents share the responsibilities of incubation for 21 to 25 days. The chicks are altricial, covered in white down, and are fed via regurgitation by both adults. They gain independence and flight capability at approximately 40 to 45 days of age.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it suffered catastrophic population declines in the late 19th century due to intensive hunting for its breeding plumes (used in the millinery trade), rigorous conservation laws have allowed its populations to make a remarkable recovery and expand geographically. Today, its primary threats include the loss and degradation of wetland ecosystems, pollution from agricultural run-off, and human disturbances at critical nesting sites.
