Description

This is a medium-sized insect belonging to the family Pentatomidae, characterized by an oval and slightly depressed body profile. Its dorsal coloration is highly diagnostic, presenting a striking contrast between a bright green pronotum and scutellum, and bronzy brown or purplish hemelytra. The scutellum is large, triangular, and lacks prominent spines, though it often exhibits slightly paler basal angles. Adults measure approximately 11 to 15 millimeters in length. The antennae are five-segmented, displaying color transitions between green and reddish hues. Nymphs undergo five distinct instars, significantly changing their color pattern from dark and yellowish tones to solid green as they reach maturity.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region. Its geographical range spans a vast portion of South America, with well-documented populations in Brazil (particularly in the central-western and southern regions), Argentina (northern and central provinces), Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela. It has also been reported in humid areas of Central America and several islands within the Caribbean, demonstrating a high ecological plasticity across different latitudinal gradients.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits savanna biomes, open woodlands, and ecological transition zones, although it exhibits a strong preference for agroecosystems and human-modified areas. It is frequently encountered in commercial legume plantations, weed-rich roadsides, orchards, and suburban gardens, where high humidity levels and an abundance of host plants facilitate its population growth and stabilization.

Feeding: It is a phytophagous insect with highly polyphagous feeding habits. Equipped with a piercing-sucking rostrum, it extracts sap from a wide variety of plants, showing a marked preference for members of the Fabaceae family (such as soybeans and beans) and the Solanaceae family (including tomatoes, eggplants, and potatoes). Its feeding activity targets tender shoots, developing pods, and fruits, causing localized cellular necrosis, flower abortion, and severe seed damage due to the injection of digestive enzymes during feeding.

Behavior: It exhibits predominantly diurnal activity, with peaks in movement and feeding during the warmest hours of the day. When threatened, it deploys a specialized chemical defense mechanism, emitting a pungent and irritating fluid from its metathoracic scent glands to deter potential predators such as birds and carnivorous insects. It is an active flyer, capable of dispersing over significant distances to colonize new agricultural fields when host plant resources decline.

Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with courtship mediated by chemical pheromones and vibrational signals transmitted through the plant substrate. Following copulation, the female deposits eggs on the underside of host leaves, organizing them into compact clusters that typically contain 14 eggs arranged geometrically in two parallel rows. The barrel-shaped eggs are initially pale green, turning darker as the embryo develops and revealing red eye spots prior to hatching. Post-embryonic development comprises five nymphal instars, the duration of which is highly dependent on ambient temperatures.

Conservation status: This taxon is currently listed as Not Evaluated (NE) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Because of its status as an agricultural pest of major economic crops, conservation initiatives do not target its protection; instead, management strategies focus on integrated pest control, incorporating biological agents such as egg parasitoids from the family Scelionidae and targeted chemical applications.
