Adults typically present a wingspan ranging between 30 and 40 millimeters. The dorsal side of the male´s wings exhibits a brilliant, highly iridescent metallic blue-green or greenish-blue base coloration, framed by deep velvety black margins and decorated with small white apical spots on the forewings. Conversely, the female displays a dorsal surface dominated by a dark brown or grayish-black background, crossed transversely by symmetrical white bands and spots, a pattern that mimics other larger understory butterfly species. The ventral surface of the wings, morphologically identical in both sexes, is highly intricate: it features a snow-white background crossed by concentric lines and wavy bands of pale brown and ochre, highlighted on the hindwing by characteristic eyespots with vibrant metallic blue or turquoise centers, a feature that gives it its common name in several regions.
Geographical distribution: This Neotropical taxon has a very wide and continuous distribution range in the Americas, extending from southern Mexico and crossing the entire continental strip of Central America, including nations such as Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. In the South American subcontinent, it is widely distributed throughout the northern and central basins, covering territories in Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It also occupies a vast portion of Brazil, ranging from the Amazon basin to the southern Atlantic forest, and extending its presence westward into Paraguay and the northern provinces of Argentina, demonstrating a remarkable ecological adaptability to different latitudes within the Neotropical region.
Habitat: Primarily associated with humid, low-altitude forest ecosystems, developing optimally in tropical rainforests, subtropical montane forests, gallery forests, forest clearings, and riparian zones. Its optimal altitudinal range lies from sea level to approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, although individuals are occasionally recorded at higher elevations in protected inter-Andean valleys. Due to its ecological tolerance and the distribution of its host plants, it is commonly observed in disturbed habitats, fast-growing secondary vegetation, rural roadsides, shaded agricultural plantations, and even urban parks and domestic gardens that preserve patches of native flora.
Feeding: Features a highly differentiated diet depending on the stage of its life cycle. In the larval or caterpillar stage, it is a specialized phytophage with a high trophic dependency on plants of the family Euphorbiaceae, showing a selective preference for species of the genus Dalechampia, such as Dalechampia triphylla and Dalechampia stipulacea, whose leaves and floral bracts they greedily devour. Once the imago or adult stage is reached, its proboscis is specialized for absorbing nutrient-rich liquids; adults rarely visit flowers for nectar, preferring to obtain mineral salts and nitrogen by mud-puddling on damp soil or wet sand along riverbanks, as well as feeding on liquids from decaying fruit, rotting organic matter, sap exuding from wounded tree trunks, and bird droppings.
Behavior: Exhibits strictly diurnal habits, registering its peaks of maximum flight activity during the middle of the day under conditions of high solar radiation. Males are markedly territorial and routinely perch on sun-exposed leaves at a height of 1 to 3 meters above the forest floor, from where they actively monitor their space and engage in fast, erratic, and decisive flights to chase away rival males or intercept receptive females passing through the understory. To regulate their internal temperature, they regularly bask with their wings fully spread on the leaves of shrubby vegetation, folding them immediately upon perceiving disturbances or approaching predators, thus exposing their cryptic ventral pattern that allows them to blend in with their surroundings.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with a dynamic aerial courtship in which the male flutters persistently around the female to convince her through the release of specific pheromones. After copulation is completed, the fertilized female meticulously searches for suitable host plants, depositing her eggs individually on the flower buds, young leaves, or bracts of the inflorescences of Dalechampia. The dome-shaped eggs are greenish-white in color and exhibit subtle longitudinal ribs. Upon hatching, the caterpillars, of greenish hues and equipped with branched tubercles and defensive urticating setae, go through several larval instars, effectively camouflaging themselves with the green parts of the host plant. At the end of its development, the mature larva secures itself firmly to a plant surface to pupate; the chrysalis is pale green and has a morphology that perfectly mimics a small leaf or flower bud, ensuring its survival against predators until the new adult emerges after approximately two weeks of incubation.
Conservation status: This species is not listed under any threat category on the IUCN Red List, owing to its very wide geographical distribution, local abundance, and high resilience to forest habitat fragmentation. However, local populations in peri-urban areas can be adversely affected by the indiscriminate use of agricultural pesticides and the systematic eradication of weeds and plants of the genus Dalechampia, which are essential for ensuring the continuity of their populations by hosting the development of their preimaginal stages.
